The Montreal Screwjob is professional wrestling parlance for a genuine, unscripted incident that took place on November 9, 1997, during a match for the World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight title between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels in Montreal, Canada.
Hart was deeply aware of the possibility of a last-minute change of plan behind his back, and, fearing a double-cross, he reportedly went as far as asking the match's referee Earl Hebner to swear an oath on his children's lives that he would not participate in such an incident.
A legacy of this incident is that at wrestling shows in Montreal (and to a lesser extent, Canada in general), chants of "You screwed Bret!" will spontaneously arise when key players in the screwjob make their appearences, particularly Hebner and Michaels.

NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Montreal Screwjob   (Site not responding. Last check: )
In professional wrestling a screwjob occurs when a match ends in a controversial finish, often involving cheating or outside interference.
A shoot screwjob occurs when a change is made without one of the participants knowing, creating an outcome that is contrary to what was supposedly planned for the storyline by the participants.
The Montreal Screwjob in 1997 was thus a significant example of a shoot screwjob.

Earl Hebner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Earland Frederick Hebner (born May 17, 1949, in Richmond, Virginia) is a professional referee best known as the senior referee for the World Wrestling Federation/Entertainment and later on in the same role on its Monday Night RAW brand from 2002-2005.
The reason for the "screwjob" was that Hart, who would be leaving the company a month later to join rival promotion World Championship Wrestling, was unwilling to lose the title to Michaels in Montréal -- Montréal is, in many estimations, one of the richest venues in Canadian wrestling history, aside from Calgary, Alberta.
The fallout of the screwjob led to a large degree of antagonism towards Hebner, McMahon, and Michaels, especially in Canada, where fans often chant "You screwed Bret!" at the offending parties.

The term derives from the fact that the matches are scripted or "booked" and that losing is at times part of the job.
So a screwjob occurs when a wrestler who has been promised a victory is in fact defeated, and he is "screwed" out of his promised victory, getting "jobbed" instead.
The most famous recent example of a screwjob, if it was in fact such, is the Montreal Screwjob.
