A nominating committee headed by Bernard Shapiro convened in the summer of 2002, and Board President Jacques Laurent was so confident of progress he announced at the beginning-of-season reception that a new director would be named by the end of the 2002-03 season.
The architectual design for the new MSO Hall and the new Conservatory of Montreal building was unveiled to controversy; with the new Liberal government in power, the outcome of the project is still up in the air.

The Quebec government faithfully subsidizes the Montreal Symphony Orchestra to the tune of several million dollars annually, but it won’t deserve this gem of a band until it also bankrolls a proper auditorium to house it.

MONTREAL (OSM) - Conductor Charles Dutoit, who led the Orchestre symphonique de Montreal (OSM) to international acclaim over the past 25 years, has quit, the Grammy Award-winning orchestra said Thursday.
The orchestra's 2002-2003 season, its 69th, was built around Dutoit's 25th anniversary, lining up guests such as violinists Itzhak Perlman and Maxim Vengerov and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
In addition to his Montreal post, Dutoit has also been the music director of the Orchestre National de France since 1990 and of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo since 1998.
