On March 8, 1895, the Montreal Victorias won the league title, and thus the Stanley Cup, but the challenge match, which was scheduled earlier for the next day, was to be between the previous year's champion and the university squad.
Montreal Shamrocks were a professional ice hockey team which played in the Amateur Hockey Association from 1896 to 1898, the Canadian Amateur Hockey League 1898-1905, the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association 1905-1909 and both the Canadian Hockey Association and the National Hockey Association 1909-1910.
The 1909 saw the departure of the Montreal AAA and the Montreal Victorias, the two remaining amateur teams, from the ECAHA, and thus the ECAHA dropped the "Amateur" from their name, becoming an all-pro league.

Amateur Hockey Association - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The AHA was born on December 8, 1888, when various hockey clubs met at the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal.
With the exception of 1888, the challenge system was exclusively used in the AHA before the advent of the Stanley Cup, while the series system became the norm in 1893, the first year the Cup was contested.
The first championship team of the AHA was the Montreal Crystals, having unofficially being declared the champions before the AHA.

The first best-of-three challenge was originally scheduled in 1897 between the AHA champion Montreal Victorias against the Central Canada Hockey Association champion Ottawa Capitals.
It would be until 1899 that the first true best-of-three challenge series was played (although the Winnipeg Victorias forfeited the second game - and the championship - after a controversial referee call), and 1900 that the first best-of-three challenge went the distance.

Ottawa Senators - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
1908 - Montreal Wanderers defeat the Ottawa Victorias January 9, and 13 (9-3, 13-1).
The modern-day Senators played their first game in the Ottawa Civic Centre, a small arena by professional standards, seating approximately 10,500, and beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-3.
Tragically, Finnigan died before the team started play, and the win against the Habs was the last bit of glory the new Senators would see; they lost more games in the 1993 season (70) than any team ever had, and suffered through several miserable seasons thereafter.

Nevertheless, the despatch of the governor, Sir Wiffiam des Voeux, to the colonial secretary, Sir H. Holland, was so entirely in favor of the principle of the bill that the Newfoundland authorities became imbued with a fixed determination to urge forward the measure for imperial acceptance.
A conference of colonial premiers was one of the notable events distinguishing that happy period, and the subject was argued before the conference at considerable length.
