An assessment done by Refugee International in Montserrado IDP camps reported that, although the situation has improved compared to November 2003, the camps were overcrowded and assistance was provided ad hoc, with huge disparities between camps (RI, 29/01/04).
Preliminary results of a nutrition survey carried out in seven IDP camps in Montserrado county suggest that the nutrition situation is under control to average (OCHA, 10/01/04).
IRC conducted an assessment in five camps in Montserrado county and six camps in Bong county in July 2002 (IRC, 07/02).

In light of government's instruction to have the IDPs in the seven Montserrado camps relocated, further implementation of the exercise that began two weeks ago remains a challenge.

 MSF-USA: Field News 8/15/2003 - Picking Up The Pieces
Recently, MSF teams completed three assessment trips to rebel-held areas of Monvoria city and Montserrado, Grand Cape Mount, and Bomi counties where there is virtually no access to health care for residents and displaced persons.
On Wednesday, August 14, two MSF teams traveled north of Monrovia to rebel-held camps for displaced in Montserrado County, and on to Bo Waterside on the Sierra Leone border in Grand Cape Mount County, and to Tubmanburg in Bomi County.
In response to ten cases of measles in MSF's two Mamba Point Hospitals, an MSF team has launched a vaccination campaign in the buildings, churches, and schools in Monrovia where tens of thousands of displaced persons are living in cramped, unhygienic conditions with little access to food or clean drinking water.

Ecomil troops managed to deploy outside Monrovia at the end of last week, but renewed fighting between Liberian government troops and the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) delayed the deployment planned for Kakata, 60 km north of Monrovia.
The ICRC is currently focusing on protection and assistance activities to help both displaced people and residents in Monrovia and the neighbouring counties of Montserrado, Bong, Margibi, Grand Bassa and Bomi.
Tracing offices have been reopened in Montserrado camps, with the registration of unaccompanied children as one of their top priorities.

MONROVIA, Liberia, Sept 12 (UNHCR) – Another 177 internally displaced people (IDPs) were transported out of Monrovia on Friday by the UN refugee agency, as efforts to relieve the pressure on the chronically overcrowded Liberian capital, as well as to launch exploratory missions and spread aid elsewhere in the country, start to gather momentum.
Over the past few weeks, UNHCR has been working closely with the camp managers of the eight IDP camps in the Montserrado area, in order to improve services and ensure that everything was in place to receive the IDPs, many of whom were living in dire conditions in Monrovia for many weeks.
Meanwhile, another inter-agency team left Monrovia by sea on a boat chartered by the World Food Programme, heading for the south-eastern town of Harper, where they are expected to arrive on Saturday afternoon.

The commission, set up as a part of the Liberian peace process that ended the country’s 14-year civil war, documented several counties in which ritualistic killings are on the increase.
In one of the complaints, the throat of one Mary Dawola of Caldwell Junction, Duala, Bushrod Island, was reportedly cut at her resident.
The commission said there were several other ritualistic killings going on in Montserrado County that the Commission has not investigated for lack of financial and logistical support from both the Government of Liberia and the International Community.

UNHCR participated in the start yesterday of an operation to relocate some 30,000 internally displaced people who have been staying in 56 central Monrovia schools and a clinic since fleeing into the city during recent fighting in and around the capital.
They are being relocated to IDP camps in the Montserrado area on the outskirts of the capital.
Over the past weeks, UNHCR has worked very closely with the camp managers of the eight IDP camps in the Montserrado area on improving services to assure that reception facilities are in place when the IDPs return.
