Monty delivers a lengthy, vituperative hate-love monologue on New York, known as the "fuck you" scene, which disses nearly every group in the city.
In no way does Lee excuse or glamourise Monty for his sins: for example, he subtly show how his dealing helped wreck the life of a man named Simon; and Norton states, on the commentary, that the film is "about the consequences of not examining what you're doing".
But coupled with this is an intelligent, sensitive look at what it means to imprison someone: the affect of incarceration on an individual – not least the horrific sexual violence which authorities the world over ignore – and the affect on their lovers, friends and family.

The movie centers on Monty Brogan (Edward Norton), an urbane and basically kind fellow (as pointedly shown in the prologue when he rescues and adopts a gravely wounded dog.) The plot's problem is that nice Monty (who at times looks like a scholar) is also a drug dealer.
Monty was obviously betrayed by someone, and his first suspicions (which prove painful and wrong) are of Naturelle.
It is in the bathroom of that joint that Monty talks to his image in the mirror and reveals his gripes against one and all in New York City.

Lee directs this plotless, no-win scenario as the last gasp of a guy with nowhere to go, and the film (written by David Benioff, from his own novel) suffers from a similar loss of potential, lacking enough focus to make Monty's odyssey compelling.
