Indianapolis is located on the Tipton Till Plain, an area of flat to gently rolling land shaped by the retreat of a glacier 18,000 years ago.
Indianapolis is at the core of a metropolitan region covering nine counties: Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Morgan, and Shelby.
At the center of the circle is the Soldiers and Sailors Monument (dedicated in 1902), considered by many as the symbol of the city.

In January 1889 Schmitz brought a plaster model of the monument, and on August 22, 1889, the cornerstone was laid.

Some Indianapolis holiday events are free, such as the Friday noon recitals at Christ Church Cathedral on Monument Circle and concerts and festivals at various times at the Indianapolis Artsgarden at Washington and Illinois streets.
Another Indianapolis holiday tradition that was conceived in the aftermath of World War II involves a cherub that was fashioned in bronze in 1947, after cherub drawings appeared in the catalog of retailer L.S. Ayres the year before.

 Hilbert Circle Theatre
Significant for many reasons to the community of Indianapolis, the Circle Theatre was one of the first "deluxe movie palaces" built in the midwest.
The Circle is also one of the oldest buildings fronting on Monument Circle; only Christ Church Cathedral (1860) and the Indianapolis Journal Building (1897) predate the theatre.
Architects for the Circle Theatre were Rubush and Hunter, one of the principal architectural firms of Indianapolis in the early 20th century.
