Urban and courthouse monuments commemorate soldiers from a particular county that served in the war and/or to the dead from that county.
The monuments in the South symbolizes the suffering that it endured, the loss of manhood and vitality through death and maiming, and the heroic courage and loyalty that kept the ragtag, shoeless armies of the Confederacy in the field for four years.

Monument to the Underground Railroad is a multi-disciplinary FreedomQuest that encourages students to analyze and synthesize information about the Underground Railroad in order to complete the task.
While the Freedom Center is not really seeking proposals for a monument to the Underground Railroad, it is requesting proposals for public art related to slavery and the Underground Railroad to place in our facility when it opens in the summer of 2004.

 Civil War Monuments in Ohio
By far, the dominant design theme for Civil War monuments in Ohio (and across the country) was the "soldier at parade rest." One historian has given credit to the Antietam National Cemetery Board for its selection of a design by the James G. Batterson firm of Hartford, CT on September 16, 1867.
The grave monument for Edwin Coppock in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Salem notes that he was "A martyr to the cause of Liberty." Also with John Brown at Harpers Ferry, Coppock was hanged on December 16, 1859.
In the Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna, there is a large grave monument to Henry and Rebecca Brantley who escaped from slavery in Tennessee in 1862 and settled in Ravenna where they "lived honest and industrious lives." This monument is inscribed with the word "Emancipation" and the symbol of the hand with a broken manacle.

Keith Payne VC, OAM born 30 August 1933, Ingham, Queensland, Australia, received the Victoria Cross — the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry that can be awarded to members of Commonwealth military forces — for acts performed while serving with the Australian Army during the Vietnam War.
Payne's citation stated that on 24 May 1969 at Ben Het in Kon Tum Province, Vietnam, he showed outstanding courage and leadership in saving the lives of many of the soldiers under his command, leading his men to safety under most difficult circumstances after an attack by the enemy in superior strength.
At the time Payne was a Warrant Officer II (WO2) in the Australian Army Training Team.
