The Monviso metamorphic ophiolite, one of the best preserved relics of oceanic crust in the Western Alps, was formed during the opening of the Mesozoic Western Alpine Tethys and underwent metamorphism to eclogitic conditions during Alpine subduction.
The Monviso ophiolite encompasses the whole lithological spectrum of the Piedmont-Liguria ophiolite rocks, with a basal unit of serpentinized peridotite in tectonic contact with the overlying metagabbros, eclogites and pillowed metabasalts.
The new data indicate that the plutonic activity recorded at Monviso was coeval with basalt extrusion and deep-sea sediment deposition in some Ligurian-type ophiolite bodies of the Cottian Alps.

The mountain of Monviso has been mentioned by numerous poets and writers in the past, and by many modern authors too, especially as it looks beautiful, and just like how a mountain might be imagined by children.
But Monviso is really like this — a perfect pyramid, when seen from the plain; 3,841 metres in height.
A visit to the 75 metre tunnel is always interesting: a portable lamp is needed to avoid tripping over little rock falls, or stretches of ice which may upset the walker in the dark.
