Mullins was a drinking man. His actual first name was never given, unless Moonshine was it.
Moon's final fling as a licensed property (and his only foray into animation) occurred in 1971, when he became one of several rotating back-segment characters on a Saturday morning TV show starring Archie.
In its heyday, Moon Mullins was carried by about 250 newspapers — not a mega-hit, but a very respectable level.

Clyde Everett Mullins was born on Nov. 3, 1931, in Cabin Holler, Tennessee, a coal mining camp in a rural area where Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee intersect.
Mullins did not learn to play golf until his 20s, he was in the Marines, stationed at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, Calif. "I was just a natural," said Mullins, who within eight months of seriously taking up the game went from a 13-handicap to shooting 68 to win the All-Marine Championship.

Mullins was born in Hamden, Maine, on Dec. 23, 1919, the son of John and Mary Mullins.
Mullins was employed for 20 years by the N.H. Department of Transportation, serving five years as personnel officer and 15 years as director of the N.H. Turnpike System.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Chase Mullins, and a brother, C. Robert Mullins, of Port St. Lucre, Fla. He also leaves daughters Terry Mason and Pamela Newberry, of Portsmouth; Katherine Hodgeman, of Rye; Elizabeth Mullins-Hussain, of Cleveland, Ohio, and a son, Michael Mullins, with the U.S. Embassy in Thailand.

Moon Mullins began his mining machinery career with Galis Electric Machines in 1963 and worked for Goodman and Fairchild International before joining the then Joy Manufacturing in 1968.
Five years later he transferred to Price, Utah as the company’s chain specialist for Utah and Wyoming and, in 1979, he was named district manager for the Western District with responsibility for all the warehouses and new equipment sales west of the Mississippi and western Canada.
Mullins was promoted to regional manager for the Western Region in 1980, with responsibility for the service centers, as well as warehouses and new equipment sales.

Moon was a tough talking - if generally good natured - kind of guy who took (and dealt) plenty of punches during his run.
While Moon had giant eyes that resembled fried eggs (in fact, in many strips, he was even called "banjoeyes"), Kayo had tiny little dots for eyes.
Today, Moon Mullins strips and original Willard art can still be found, but are on the rare side and are highly valued.
