To call Moonie a township is to give it a quality which would probably surprise most of the residents.
Located on the junction of the Moonie and Leichhardt Highways some 323 km west of Brisbane and close to the Weir and Moonie Rivers (noted for their quality fishing) it is really nothing more than a service station, a few houses and a motel.
In reality it is only a small oil field accounting for less than one per cent of Australia's oil and gas reserves but the excitement which was associated with its success led to the establishment, in 1969, of a pipeline which joined the fields to refineries in Brisbane.

As it had rained overnight the gravel edges to the road were in some places very soft which made it tricky when two vehicles met on a stretch which had only one lane sealed.
West of Moonie and lasting over 75 km I came across a multitude of large brown Cockroaches running across the road.
Overnight I was woken on several occasions by the noise of feral pigs which were coming to the creek to drink as well as the noise from numerous small frogs and something (most probably carp) splashing around in the creek.

While it is not feasible to provide continuous coverage on many of these highways, this program will provide `spots' of coverage that will benefit both local residents and business and holiday travellers.
Mobile phone coverage is also being improved on more than 9000kms of national highways as part of the Commonwealth Government's $25 million Mobile Phones on Highways program with Vodafone, with coverage under the program expected to be completed by the end of 2002.
