Carly's' Serenade'a misstep in moonlight - Entertainment - The Washington Times, America's Newspaper
With "Moonlight Serenade," her first release of new material in nearly five years, Carly Simon revisits two earlier projects (1981's "Torch" and 1990's "My Romance") that found the introspective pop/rock songstress covering familiar standards.
Perry's rich orchestration of the album's opener, "Moonlight Serenade," perfectly captures the essence of the big-band era, but when Miss Simon comes in, it's like your cousin Maude performing karaoke -- albeit with spectacular instrumentation -- at the family reunion.
"Serenade's" most positive aspects are the 11 lush arrangements, complete with synthesized strings, by producer Richard Perry (who found earlier success with Miss Simon on her 1972 masterpiece, "No Secrets"), Mike Thompson and Lauren Wild that, unfortunately, overpower the star.

 Moonlight Sonata
Was there an ocean near the balcony, and the dinner guests now from another era, standing in admiration as the wan lover spoke of his heart's sickness, speaking to the cure who sat at her table listening with admiring eyes to his serenade?
It was during this time that I first heard him play Moonlight Sonata, by Beethoven.
It was preceded by a long silence — one whole minute — and the expectations of the group were piqued.

Ultimate Metal Reviews - Kamelot - The Black Halo
Virtually all other tracks have their excellent points as well: "When the Lights are Down" is a swift mover, the eight-plus minute "Memento Mori" has a strong kick-in, and all of "Soul Society," "Nothing Ever Dies," and "Serenade" are solid.
Epica's Simone Simons lends some female layering to the tremendous lyric-based melody of "The Haunting (Somewhere in Time)," and "Moonlight" is similiar in nature.
It now appears that Roy Khan may be the sole key ingredient, as he and Thomas Youngblood have clearly turned out some of the genre's best tunes of the past four years.

Confident interpretations and respectable playing aside, what you hear on Moonlight Serenade is naturalness and joy, a spirit that bespeaks Simon at her peak.
Not having grown up to her music (I was raised in Latin America), Carly is not precisely an icon that I recall from my youth or anything like that, nor was she singing to "my generation" anyway (I am 33 as of this writing).
Her range is good and the musical arrangements are equally well executed.

Polish Music Newsletter, vol. 11, no. 3, March 2005
The manuscript is entitled Small Suite and is in 5 movements: Prelude (Morning), Fugato (Over the Mountains), At the Spring, Polka (Sounds from the Ballroom), and Serenade (Gay Moonlight).
The first, Three Pictures from Alabama, is the published version of three of the songs from the manuscript: At the Spring, Polka (Sounds from the Ballroom), and Serenade (Gay Moonlight).
Interestingly, it appears from markings in the manuscript that de Zielinski originally intended to publish Prelude (Morning) and Fugato (Over the Mountains) as part of the Three Pictures from Alabama, rather than Polka (Sounds from the Ballroom) and Serenade (Gay Moonlight).

Turner Classic Movies This Month Article
A perfect example of Universal's A product, The Glenn Miller Story is full of memorable moments such as the scene in which Miller is finally inspired to create his signature, up-front clarinet sound for "Moonlight Serenade." Mann develops and executes this sequence with both understated beauty and a love for the composer and the music.
In some ways, it wasn't surprising to see Hollywood lionize this popular musician who had appeared as himself in two of the better swing films of the forties, Orchestra Wives (1942) and Sun Valley Serenade (1941).
The Glenn Miller Story was ranked fifth for the year in profits, and the actor made over a million dollars from the arrangement with Universal with this film alone.
