Banana Yoshimoto was something of a one-hit wonder with her debut, Kitchen, originally published in Japan in 1988.
The English-language edition of that novella got her on many western bestseller lists in 1993 and spawned what some—okay, her publicists, mostly—called Bananamania.
She followed Kitchen up with a short novel, then a collection of stories, then a long novel, but nothing really hit with the urgency of her Kitchen, which as well as the haunting 100-page title novella contains a creepy/sad 50-pager called “Moonlight Shadow”.

Yoshimoto combines a few ingredients: the death of a grandmother, a lonely girl, a beautiful transsexual, the transsexual's son, hunger (for food and companionship), and the healing love of one person for another.

 Kitchen
Banana Yoshimoto's Kitchen is an enchantingly original and deeply affecting book that juxtaposes two tales about mothers, transsexuality, kitchens, love, tragedy, and the terms they all come to in the minds of a pair of free-spirited young women in contemporary Japan.
Told in a whimsical style that recalls the early Marguerite Duras, "Kitchen" and its companion story, "Moonlight Shadow," are elegant tales whose seeming simplicity is the ruse of a masterful storyteller.
They are the work of a very special new writer whose voice echoes in the mind and the soul.
