Exploring Mars: The Shadow of Phobos
The two moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, were discovered in 1877 by Asaph Hall.
Both Mars and the Earth rotate so that the Sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and their moons all orbit in the same direction as the planets rotate.
To figure this out, compare the velocity of Phobos in orbit to your velocity on the equator of Mars, 0.2405 kilometers per second, and calculate the velocity of Phobos relative to you.

As a historical oddity, Kepler predicted that Mars would have two moons based on the idea of completing the sequence???: Earth has 1 moon, Mars should have 2 moons, and Jupiter has 4 moons (as thought in circa 1610) (Ca-200).

Water channels have been long identified on Mars, but they it is argued that they could be due to flood events due sudden heating of frozen water: volcanic or impact heat would be the cause.

 Updated Guide 5.0 software
Central meridians are shown for Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the Sun, the Moon, Galilean moons, and (when viewed from other planets) the Earth.
I've since found maps for the Galilean moons and for some moons of Saturn; I will upload these when I have processed them, along with some extra maps for the Earth and Mars.
This is probably one of the most useless features I have ever added to Guide (though I hope the mapping of Mars will be of use during the coming opposition, and lunar observers may find it nice to see what parts of the moon are well-placed for observing).

 USGS Astrogeology: Voyager Mission
The twin Voyager spacecraft were launched in 1975 to conduct studies of Jupiter, Saturn, Saturn's rings, and the larger moons of both planets.
The five year mission extended to twelve years, allowing the spacecraft to explore not only Jupiter and Saturn, but also Uranus, Neptune, and a total of 48 of the gas giants' moons.
This new leg of the journey called the Voyager Interstellar Mission.

Dr. SOHO's FAQ: General Astronomy Questions
Mars' moons, Phobos and Deimos, do not have any atmosphere, and they are thought to be captured asteroids.
Mars is a planet with a hard crust, like Earth is. Jupiter and Saturn are planets that have no hard surface - they are called "gas giants" because their atmospheres continue far down into the depths of each planet.
Once we understood that the Earth and Moon were analogous to the planets and their satellites, we extended the names in both directions, referring to Earth as a planet and the other planet's satellites as "moons".

In Swords of Mars, John Carter describes the moons as Thuria, the larger moon orbits around Barsoom at 5,800 miles from the planet's surface; Cluros is slightly smaller and orbits at 14,500 miles.
Barsoom, as Mars is known by its inhabitants, is only one of many worlds catalogued by Martian astronomers.

After 385 years or so, the kidney bean is now approaching Earth again from the other side, and the Earth, once more, alters the orbit of Cruithne so that its period of revolution around the Sun is again slightly less than a year.
The orbits these two moons follow around Saturn are much simpler than the one Cruithne follows, but operate along the same general principles.
Jupiter has many (about 400 objects, the Trojan asteroids); there are also other small co-orbital moons in the Saturnian system:

Mars trilogy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mars trilogy is a series of three science fiction novels by Kim Stanley Robinson, chronicling the settlement and terraforming of the planet Mars.
A great portion of Blue Mars is concerned with the effects of extreme longevity on its fictional protagonists, most of whom have lived over two hundred years as a result of repeated longevity treatments.
The books also speculate on the colonization of other planets and moons in the solar system, and include descriptions of cities on Callisto, Mercury, Titania, and Venus.

Mars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The datum for Mars is defined by the fourth-degree and fourth-order spherical harmonic gravity field, with the zero altitude defined by the 610.5 Pa (6.105 mbar) atmospheric pressure surface (approximately 0.6% of Earth's) at a temperature of 273.16 K. This pressure and temperature correspond to the triple point of water.
Mars has only a quarter the surface area of the Earth and only one-tenth the mass, though its surface area is approximately equal to that of the Earth's dry land because Mars lacks oceans.
This symbol is a stylized representation of the shield and spear of the god Mars, and in biology it is used as a sign for the male sex.

Most of these moons of are small (less than 200 kilometers across), irregular, and undifferentiated (like Phobos and Deimos, the moons of Mars).
A sharper view of the Galilean moons was provided by the two Voyager spacecraft, which flew past Jupiter in 1979, and the Galileo spacecraft, which went into orbit around Jupiter in 1995.
The Galilean moons, starting from the outermost and moving inward, are Callisto, Ganymede, Europa, and Io (named after four of the god Jupiter's startlingly numerous lovers).

In Mars the need to be an individual is more important than the need to relate or to be part of mankind.
For this discussion we must distinguish the zodiacal sign Aries from the god Ares, later called Mars and ruler of the sign Aries.
The latter two were always associated with strife and battle; the planet Mars' two moons were named after them.
