Moonta is about 20 kilometres southwest of Kadina and 19 kilometres south of the port town, Wallaroo, forming the triangle.
The mines at Moonta proved to be the richest mines in the whole of South Australia by 1917, exceeding the total wealth created by all other mines since 1836, the year of establishment of South Australia.
The population of Moonta in 1875 was 12,000.

The town of Kadina (33°57′S 137°42′E) is located on the Yorke Peninsula of South Australia 144 kilometres north-northwest of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia.
Kadina is about 20 kilometres north-east of Moonta and 8 kilometres east of the port town of Wallaroo, however Kadina and Wallaroo are both growing to the point where they are expected to merge.
Former South Australian Premier, John Olsen and former Australian rules footballer, Richard Champion, were born and raised in Kadina.

Wallaroo (33°55′S 137°37′E) is a port town on the western side of Yorke Peninsula in South Australia.
It is one of the three Copper Triangle towns, historically famous for their shared copper mining industry, Kadina and Moonta being the other two.
Wallaroo was connected to Kadina by horse-drawn tramway in 1862 and from Moonta in 1866.

Moonta is a historically significant town of South Australia with its well-maintained historic buildings and the the ruins of the old copper works.
Considered by some as 'Australia's Little Cornwall' a title perhaps taken from the fact that the first miners to the area were Cornishmen, a fact reinforced by the bi-annual Cornish Festival held in May. The Cornishmen employed century old mining techniques to extract copper ore from the mines.

John Scaddan was born in Moonta, South Australia on 4 August 1876.
He worked in the area until 1896, when he came to Western Australia, probably as part of the gold rush to the Kalgoorlie goldfields.
This small majority, along with the outbreak of war in 1914 and the onset of one of the worst droughts ever to hit Western Australia, severely restricted Scaddan's policy in his second term.
