This is a list of the 200 currently operating suburban railway stations (216 including greater metropolitan stations) in Melbourne, Australia.
There are also a further 19 stations on 3 heritage, volunteer-operated, tourist railways.
Stations are broken up into 3 Metcard ticketing zones (some stations are in two zones, where tickets for either zone may be used), as well as the City Saver area, which is within Zone 1 and covers the central business district.

This station, and the surrounding area of high-density housing commission estates was named in honour of the Battle of El-Alamein, which occurred in Egypt in World War II and was one of the turning points of the entire conflict.
This station boasted an interesting form of hailing a train when it was an unscheduled stop - intending passengers would have to place a red light upon a signal post to inform an approaching train of their desire to catch it.
The station is a quaint little affair, with a small timber structure of mid-1920s' construction on the up platform, and a shelter on the down side dating from the 1970's.

The lines were to run from Sandringham station along the coast road to Beaumaris and thence inland to Cheltenham railway station, with a branch from Beaumaris continuing down the coast road to Mordialloc.
This was the height of the notorious Victorian land boom, and Moorabbin Shire Council (of which the future Sir Thomas Bent was the Chairman) was keen to ensure development of the area south of Sandringham.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways recommended an extension of the railway to South Sandringham in 1910, but this was later vetoed as a result of the projected high cost of land resumptions.

Thomas Bent, as President of the Shire of Moorabbin led a delegation of councillors and ratepayers to the Commissioner of Railways asking that a station be built at Bay Road.
Thomas Bent was a councillor at Brighton from 1874-1909, Mayor 1874, 1878, 1879, 1884, 1885, 1887, 1888, 1903, and 1908; councillor at Moorabbin 1863-1909, President 1884-85, 1885-86, 1887-88, 1888-89, 1900-01, 1901-02, Commissioner of Railways in 1881-83 and Minister 1902-03, Premier 1904-1908.
He insisted that the stations in his constituency be of a particular ‘cottage-style’ design not used elsewhere.

 Events in the Past: Official Opening of the Mordialloc Railway Station
After the brief ceremony at the station two hundred individuals walked across the bridge under the banner to Bloxsidge’s Bridge Hotel where they were accommodated in a large marque, enjoyed a substantial banquet ‘where every delicacy in season was in abundance’, and participated in the toasts to various organizations and groups.
In addition to Thomas Bent, Minister of Railways, the Solicitor General and the Minister of Agriculture were on board together with Sir John O’Shanassy a former Premier (1857), John Keys, a local member, Mr Bray, Premier of South Australia, and Mr Gregory, Survey General of Queensland and a noted explorer.
An earlier train leaving Melbourne at thirty five minutes past ten transported four hundred school children from East Brighton, South Brighton and Cheltenham free of charge to participate in the welcome to officials and guests at Mordialloc.
