There are also a further 19 stations on 3 heritage, volunteer-operated, tourist railways. This station, and the surrounding area of high-density housing commission estates was named in honour of the Battle of El-Alamein, which occurred in Egypt in World War II and was one of the turning points of the entire conflict. This station boasted an interesting form of hailing a train when it was an unscheduled stop - intending passengers would have to place a red light upon a signal post to inform an approaching train of their desire to catch it. TMSV: VR electric street railways The lines were to run from Sandringham station along the coast road to Beaumaris and thence inland to Cheltenham railway station, with a branch from Beaumaris continuing down the coast road to Mordialloc. This was the height of the notorious Victorian land boom, and Moorabbin Shire Council (of which the future Sir Thomas Bent was the Chairman) was keen to ensure development of the area south of Sandringham.
