UNC researchers selected herpes zoster because (1) nearly 100% of the population are exposed to the virus that causes the disease by the time they are 20 (and 50% by age 5); (2) people with known immune suppression are more likely to contract the disease; and (3) the symptoms are severe enough to be remembered.
