An ordained minister in the United Church of Canada, Calvert served as minister of Zion United Church in Moose Jaw from 1979 to 1986.
He was re-elected in the 1991 and 1995 elections in the riding of Moose Jaw Wakamow, and in the 1999 election in Saskatoon Riversdale.
