  What is the Moose Test?
A moose test is a type of vehicle safety test designed to simulate the effect of a collision with an animal.
The moose test is designed to account for both animal collisions and swerving to avoid them, and is usually performed on a closed course with a professional driver, although some car companies use automated safety testing systems to perform a moose test.
A moose test begins with the moose, which is usually simulated with steel and other strong materials, arranged to be about the size and shape of an adult moose.

In a final test the test pilot jumped six metres from a bridge in Massachusetts and successfully survived water impact and floated downstream (a competitor claimed there was a little bit of a difference between 6 m and 500 km).
The foam tests showed the heat (exceeding 100 degrees C at the core) that the foam generated during the exothermic deployment reaction was not transferred to the subject and was not uncomfortable.
Tests of the ablative materials were conducted in the General Electric supersonic air arc tunnel and verified the heat of ablation of the flexible shield material.

Minnesota Conservation Volunteer: Moose Mystery: Minnesota DNR
Moose on Isle Royale in Lake Superior, numbering as many as 3,000 during the 1920s, overate their range and dwindled to about 500 during a series of hard winters in the mid-1930s.
Finally, moose are susceptible to "moose sickness," caused by a meningeal nematode (brain worm) passed in a complicated cycle from white-tailed deer to moose via snails and slugs.
Moose sickness is often blamed for far-flung wanderings of some moose, such as two that roamed from northern Minnesota deep into Iowa and were killed, one shot by a poacher and the other struck by a semi.

Disguised as a moose, biologist Joel Berger and his research partner can get close enough to toss urine-scented snowballs at thier subjects and play wolf howls to test the moose's reaction to the scent of predators.
Berger and his colleagues studied the responses of moose to predator sounds and scents in areas where predators were present, predator-free zones, and areas where predators had recently been reintroduced after several decades of absence.
To test a moose's response to predators, Berger lobs snowballs soaked with wolf, bear and human urine at the moose.

 The Problem: Moose (Alces alces)
Moose cause damage to landscape plants when winter snow makes it difficult for them to reach their normal food supply.
One sure way to determine if moose are causing damage to ornamental plants is to observe the animal in the act, but if the damage occurs unknowingly, a close examination of the damaged branches will help you identify what is responsible.
Moose in different areas have different tastes, moose in one area of Alaska may browse one variety of plant and completely avoid the same variety in another area.

 Unique Facts about Canada: Moose
The animal Alces alces, called the moose in North America and the elk in Europe (see also elk for other animals called elk) is the largest of all the deer family Cervidae, distinguished from other members of Cervidae by the form of the antlers of its males.
From the shortness of their necks, moose are unable to graze, and their chief food consists of young shoots and leaves of willow and birch, and waterplants (such as Arnicus brucitus).
An Alaskan moose discovered in 1897 holds the record for being the largest known modern deer; it was a male standing 2.34 m (7 ft 8 in) at the shoulders and weighing 816 kg (1799 lb).

The moose test consists of simulating an emergency avoidance situating, moving the vehicle across two lanes of traffic with a violent whip of the steering wheel.
Moose have long, spindly legs and a very heavy body and if a car hits one, it cuts it off at the legs and delivers the full body weight through the front windshield of most vehicles.
So using the moose as a symbol of what ESC can do (avoid the moose!) is a way of reminding people that it is just as important and possible to avoid the crash as to survive it.
