Moosonee began in 1903 as a rival post to the one at Moose Factory.
The site was chosen in 1931 as the northern terminus of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway (now ONTARIO NORTHLAND Railway), which follows an old native canoe route along the Abitibi and Moose rivers.
Moosonee is Ontario's only saltwater port, but high hopes for its prosperity were never realized.

Moosonee is a small town located on the shore of the Moose River a few miles from the south end of James Bay which is the southern portion of Hudson Bay in northern Canada.
Moosonee is at latitude 51 North - not very far north, not even far north in Ontario but it seems remote to many people as it is beyond the end of the road network.
Because Moosonee is close to James Bay, the Moose River is a tidal the tides are not as dramatic as found in places such as the Bay of Fundy, they do result in an ever changing river that can be difficult to navigate.

Annie Hardisty, first resident of Moosonee, was living in a tent approximately a quarter mile past the Polar Bear Lodge towards the Hudson’s Bay Company Transport.
At their first glimpse of an airplane, one local resident started singing "There is a happy land, far far away", thinking it was Jesus arriving on the Cross; and another resident started shooting at the plane.
The Moosonee store (presently used as the Staff House for Austin Airways Ltd.) was one of the stores taken over.

The Corporation of the Town of Moosonee Recreation Department is committed to providing a variety of recreation programs and services that are accessible to and respond to the needs and desires of all members of the community.

My mother called Moosonee "the Times Square of the North," as she has met many people who've lived there or visited, e.g., Pinetree (the Base) or teachers.

We were thinking of taking the little bear to moosonee and doing a two or three day trip from there.
You might want to speak with the OPP in Moosonee, before contemplating a paddling trip along the coast of James Bay.They are responsible for Search and Rescue in the Bay area.
Albeit, he was kayaking solo, early in the season, and up north of Churchill -- but the wind, waves, ice, and tides cut short his attempt at a full summer trip.
