Oak Ridges Moraine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Overlaying this core is a glaciolacustrine sedimentary layer that is younger and topographically lower, principally in the delta and basin areas of the moraine.
It wasn't until William Logan, in 1863, that the moraine's extent was established to be between the Niagara Escarpment in the west, and the Trent River in the east.
Although preservation of the moraine was first suggested in the 1940s, it was not until 1991 that the issue achieved prominence in political discourse.

Moraine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lateral moraine: The talus and other material from the sides of a glacial valley accumulated on the glacier and carried along with it.
Terminal moraine: When balance is maintained between the melting of a glacier and its forward advance, the debris carried on (superglacial), within (englacial), and dragged along the bottom (sub-glacial) is deposited at that point and builds up a heterogeneous mass of the transported material called the terminal moraine.
Interlobate moraine: If large glaciers and continental ice sheets advance irregularly so that their margins are lobate, when the margins retreat by melting the resulting terminal moraines of boulders, clay, and sand simulate the original interlobate shape of the glacier or glaciers, and therefore such moraines are called interlobate.

Couchiching Conservancy - The Oro Moraine Habitat Project
The significance of the forests of the Moraine can be considered in two contexts: first, their significance in comparison to elsewhere in southern Ontario; and second, the relative significance of the various sites within the Moraine examined as part of this study.
One of the primary ecological values of the Oro Moraine is the presence of relatively large, intact cores of forest, which provides the forest interior conditions needed by a group of songbirds, raptors, and other wildlife that are under serious stress in southern Ontario.
In several places in the central section of the Moraine, notably along the 4th line, the 6th/7th line, and the 9th line, there is a risk that future expansion of non-forest land uses could break the continuity of the forest corridor without careful planning.

The term 'moraine' emerged in the French Alps several hundred years ago as a local name for the ridges of debris found at the edges of glaciers.
Although many definitions have appeared since the term first originated, moraines have one thing in common: they are all accumulations of drift, deposited beneath or at the edge of glaciers.
Because moraines were formed at melting ice fronts, their sediments were deposited in a jumble of sand, gravel, mud and detached blocks of glacier ice.
