Moral panic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A moral panic is a mass movement based on the false or exaggerated perception that some individual or group, frequently a minority group or a subculture, is dangerously deviant and poses a menace to society.
A factor in moral panic is the deviancy amplification spiral, the phenomenon defined by media critics as an increasing cycle of reporting on a category of antisocial behavior or other undesirable events.
For example, a pastor interviewed in this study referred to the automobile as a "house of prostitution on wheels," and condemned this new invention for giving citizens a way of driving out of town when they should be attending church.

 Moral Reasoning
Morality, it may seem, instead requires individuals to act on ends that may not be part of their ”motivational set,” in the terminology of Williams 1981.
A simple example is that of Ann, who is tired after a long and stressful day, and hence has reason not to act on her best assessment of the reasons bearing on a particularly important investment decision that she immediately faces (37).
Dramatic examples of this second type of case are familiar from anthropology and from teenagers who suddenly develop moral sensibilities divergent from those of their parents.

 Moral Relativism
Moral relativism has the unusual distinction — both within philosophy and outside it — of being attributed to others, almost always as a criticism, far more often than it is explicitly professed by anyone.
Examples of moral practices that appear sharply at odds with moral outlooks common in the United States are not hard to come by: polygamy, arranged marriages, suicide as a requirement of honor or widowhood, severe punishments for blasphemy or adultery, female circumcision or genital mutilation (as it is variously called), and so on.
Moral objectivists can allow that there are special cases in which moral disagreements cannot be rationally resolved, for example on account of vagueness or indeterminacy in the concepts involved.

 Robinson19
Moral examples serve first for confirmation, and commendation unto others of the truth and goodness contained in precepts, and are therefore called by some the pledges of rules [Plato].
Notwithstanding, although examples of others great and ancient cannot make sins to be no sins; yet doth it something lessen their blame, who are misled by such guides; as it was in the polygamy of the patriarchs [Beza]; and both hath been, and is in other the like traditional evils.
Some pretend the examples of good men in their failings for the excuse of the evils, which they themselves have a mind to do and would do, though none ever had done them before them or should do them after them: others, are indeed misled by their aberrations.

In ethics and moral philosophy this type of law is often called a "human legal code" to distinguish it from more fundamental laws applicable to all beings (metaphysics, ontology).
Such a body of laws can be seen as a legally-enforced ethical code or as a "secular moral code" (to the degree that political leaders replace religious leaders as moral examples).
For example, one can explain the idea of precedent more easily than that of the reasonable man, but it may be much harder to explain why precedent is "fair" to one without "higher education".

 Moral Truths and Moral Principles
Moral rules provide us with practical guides to action; in conjunction with statements of particular fact they enable us to "predict" whether the actions we are considering would be morally acceptable.
Moral "facts" which can only be explained by such principles, I suggest, are moral "facts" which have no explanation and hence, according to my argument, not really facts at all.
Of course in both the moral and the scientific case, the principles that lead to the apparent conflict are prima facie principles, or have implicit ceterus paribus clauses, or something of the sort.

Kohlberg claimed that his stages of moral development are universal, applying equally to all human beings across cultural divisions.
To measure the level at which persons are operating morally, Kohlberg developed a highly refined interview process in which hypothetical situations are presented that involve a moral dilemma.
One of the best-known examples of hypothetical moral dilemmas presented in Kohlberg's interview is that of an impoverished man who needs a certain medicine for his wife who is ill: is the man justified in stealing the medicine from the pharmacy when he does not have enough money to pay for it?
