Morane-Saulnier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aéroplanes Morane-Saulnier is a French aircraft manufacturer formed by Raymond Saulnier and the Morane Brothers in October 1911.
Their first commercially successful design was the Morane-Saulnier L, used as a fighter during the early days of World War I.
Their initial production was the Model A, a continuation of a monoplane design produced by the previous Morane company (sometimes callede Morane-Borel), using a wing-warping mechanism for control, in which Jules Védrines won the Paris-Madrid race on May 26, 1911.

 Morane Saulnier MS 406
The Morane Saulnier had the privilege, and perhaps the misfortune, to be the first modern French fighter, i.e., a low-wing monoplane with enclosed cockpit, retractable landing gear, and what was supposed to be appreciably higher performance than what the French Air Force (or Armee de l'Aire) had used before.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, the Morane Saulnier was the most numerous French fighter, followed by the Curtiss Hawk 75, an airplane of similar generation, but with more advanced thinking behind it.
The Morane's fault lay in the fact that the official request that led to its design was not visionary enough, at a time of great and revolutionary changes in fighter design and development.

Roland Garros French WWI ACE and the Morane-Saulnier N Scout
Saulnier invented a steel deflector unit to be fitted on the propeller, directly in the gun's line of flre.
Difficulties were caused by the faultiness of the standard ammunition supplied, and Saulnier replaced his gear with a crude arrangement of steel deflectors fixed to the airscrew blades; those bullets which did not pass between the blades were deflected by the steel plates.
Other French pilots quickly obtained Morane single seaters; the N was flown by Navarre, the first French ace and by Pegoud, the pre-war exhibition pilot who shot down six cumny aeroplanes before being killed on August 31st, 1915.

The Morane-Saulnier Type N was a French monoplane fighter aircraft of the First World War.
While the Type N was a graceful-looking aircraft and utilised an advanced, aerodynamic design, it was not easy to fly due to its stiff controls (using wing warping instead of ailerons) and high landing speed.
