 Events in the Past: Establishing a Railway Line to Mordialloc
The railway line, as constructed to Mordialloc, proceeded in a reasonably straight line south from Caulfield until it reached South Brighton (Moorabbin) where it darted across Point Nepean Road and tracked on the western side of that road until it reached close to Mordialloc when it resumed it eastern orientation.
James Patterson, the Minister of Railways said he was tired of the political wrangling about the nature of the railway extensions and would have preferred that the routes be described on the basis of parishes traversed, rather than detailing them from allotment to allotment.
The view on the defence issue was that if Melbourne were attacked from Western Port Bay she would have to quickly assemble troops on the eastern shore of the bay to face the threat, and trains were the most efficient way to get troops to the site of the action.

Thomas Bent, as President of the Shire of Moorabbin led a delegation of councillors and ratepayers to the Commissioner of Railways asking that a station be built at Bay Road.
Thomas Bent was a councillor at Brighton from 1874-1909, Mayor 1874, 1878, 1879, 1884, 1885, 1887, 1888, 1903, and 1908; councillor at Moorabbin 1863-1909, President 1884-85, 1885-86, 1887-88, 1888-89, 1900-01, 1901-02, Commissioner of Railways in 1881-83 and Minister 1902-03, Premier 1904-1908.
He insisted that the stations in his constituency be of a particular ‘cottage-style’ design not used elsewhere.

Mordialloc was decorated with bunting, which according to a newspaper report, fluttered in a light breeze.
After the brief ceremony at the station two hundred individuals walked across the bridge under the banner to Bloxsidge’s Bridge Hotel where they were accommodated in a large marque, enjoyed a substantial banquet ‘where every delicacy in season was in abundance’, and participated in the toasts to various organizations and groups.
In addition to Thomas Bent, Minister of Railways, the Solicitor General and the Minister of Agriculture were on board together with Sir John O’Shanassy a former Premier (1857), John Keys, a local member, Mr Bray, Premier of South Australia, and Mr Gregory, Survey General of Queensland and a noted explorer.

They are always on time, clean and modern, and most of the stations have been refurbished and modernised.
Over the past year I have had some eyesight problems and have sometimes had to resort to using trains to get to work, rather than driving, and I must say that the Melbourne train network has improved enormously over the last twenty years or so.
