Date: 07 Jul 1998 11:08 PM The Kyivan "Rus Chronicles" which contain the famous "Povist Vremenykh Lit" by Nestor tells very clearly that the Russian nation is descended primarily from Finno-Ugric tribes and not Slavic tribes.
These Finno-Ugric tribes are identified as the Chud, Ves, Meria, Muroma, Cheremysy, Mordva, Perm, Pechera, Yam, Zymyhola, Kors, Narova, and Lib.
These Finno-Ugric tribes were the indigenous tribes which lived in the area which is now European Russia into which the Slavic tribes of Slovenes and Kryvychi slowly pressed in and eventually became absorbed.

The singers voices and unique harmonies are the group's main attraction - a style all their own, but with deep roots in the Finno-Ugric women’s singing tradition of the
Karelia, Setu, Mari Republic, Ingria, Mordva and others eastern tribes.
One key feature of these styles is extremely close harmonies, so close that they usually seem quite strange to un-tuned western ears.

Rock Paper Scissors - Värttinä, iki (NorthSide) - Bio   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Effortlessly blending ancient Finnish runo poetry, distinctive Finno-Ugric vocal harmonies, traditional and contemporary acoustic instrumentation, complex and uncommon rhythms, and original and highly imaginative compositions and arrangements, Värttinä stands alone as an innovator, with eight groundbreaking albums and over a decade of international touring.
Värttinä's style, stemming from the women's singing traditions of Finno-Ugric tribes of the east (including Karelia, Setu, Mari Republic, Ingria, Mordva and others), adds an explosive spirit of honest joy and creative energy to close-knit harmonies.
As fiddler Kari Reiman explains, "Värttinä's harmonies are a combination of many styles, with our own ideas added in." These traditional harmonies may seem strange to western ears, but Värttinä's presentation makes assimilation to this complex style pleasurably easy.
