River discharge (range 0.18 to 3.1 m³/s), other physical characteristics (width, depth, and gradient), and water quality characteristics (dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and total dissolved solids) were similar at the time the fish were collected both years.
Our fish community data are the first available for the upper basin of the Moreau River and with our physical habitat data may allow future surveyors to discern trends in the health of the watershed and fish community.

The only fish data for similar rivers in South Dakota are from cursory surveys done between 1931 and 1952 on the Grand, Moreau, Cheyenne, Bad, and White rivers (Bailey and Allum 1962).
The Moreau River, which flows through one of the most undeveloped river basins in South Dakota, can be generally characterized as a warmwater river with medium to high turbidity.
Our purpose was to 1) determine the distribution and abundance of fishes in the upper Moreau River, and 2) characterize the riverine habitat of the main river.

Someone apparently dumped some spotted bass in the Osage River prior to 1940, and by the early 1940's they were well established in the upper Osage and in the lake.
By the late 1950's spotted bass were common in the Moreau River, and they were shown to be hybridizing extensively with smallmouth bass in that stream.
The Meramec River enters the Mississippi downstream from the mouth of the Missouri.

Representatives of counties bordering the Missouri River met in Garrison on Thursday with the intent of forming a Missouri River Water Resource Joint Board, but some concerns still remain, and formation of the new board may be a couple of months in the offing.
While the amount of rain and snow that had fallen across the river's drainage from its headwaters in Montana through North and South Dakota last week will help farmers and ranchers, it would have a negligible effect on reversing the record low water levels in the Missouri.

 Cheyenne River
The Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation was originally a central part of the Great Sioux Reservation which was established on April 29, 1868 by the treaty of Fort Laramie.
Prior to the making of this treaty and prior to the coming of the white-man; there existed a period of time which is often called the Golden Age of Siouan culture, dating from the year 1775.
What was once a vast territorial holding that extended into North Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, and all of South Dakota west of the Missouri river; now shrank to a minuscule holding encompassing only the area north of the Cheyenne river to a point just 10 miles north of the Moreau river.

Ice jams on the White River and some nearby streams caused some flooding in late February in the central part of the State.

Special Area 13 was used by the then DOT Canals Division as early as the 1950s as a disposal/storage area for navigational dredge spoils from the Hudson River.
Because of the known existence of PCBs in some Hudson River sediment, the New York State Department of Health (DOH) took surface soil samples from the individual's private residence in Moreau.
The investigation found that in addition to the original Moreau residence, only soils collected using a PCB field screening method at one other residence and at two businesses in Washington County indicated that PCBs may be present at levels that exceed New York State surface cleanup guidelines of 1 ppm.

Water quality in the Cheyenne River, Moreau River, and surrounding tributaries s affected by many natural and anthropogenic factors such as geology, effluent discharges, agricultural practices, irrigation return flows, and past/present mining practices.
The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe 106 Water Quality Program is addressing these factors through cooperation and understanding with all concerned: monitoring sewage lagoon discharges, developing stream restoration projects, and fixating on the people's needs are only a few of the goals set forth by the CRST Department of Environment in Natural Resources.
