The distinguishing feature of the scholarship is the extensive summer enrichment program, which provides global hands-on leadership and problem-solving experiences in four areas: outdoor leadership, public service, enterprise and international research.
Morehead Scholars in UNC’s classes of 2005 and 2006 produced a George L. Mitchell Scholar and a Harry S. Truman Scholar.
For example, Morehead Scholars in UNC’s classes of 2005 and 2006 included editors of five campus publications; a vice chair of the Undergraduate Honor Court; a cabinet coordinator of the Campus Y, UNC’s largest student organization; two senior class marshals; and four members of the Order of the Golden Fleece honorary society.

The Morehead is merit-based and students applying should demonstrate the following criteria: capacity to lead and to motivate fellow students, scholastic ability and extracurricular attainments, moral force of character, and physical vigor.
Gates Millennium Scholars: Students eligible for this scholarship must be African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American, have a GPA of 3.3 (unweighted), and plan to enroll in a college or university as full-time degree seeking student.
AXA Scholarship: Students who have set and reached ambitious goals, demonstrated drive, determination, and have the ability to succeed in college are encouraged to apply.

Applicants for the Adult Learner’s Scholarship must be at least 21 years of age and have been outside the formal education system for four or more years before re-entering.
Prior to October 1, scholarship recipients must provide the KAEOPP treasurer (via their nominating member) with proof of enrollment in a postsecondary program involving at least 1,000 clock hours, or 60 semester credit hours of study.
A scholarship nomination will only be entertained by the committee if the nominator has paid KAEOPP dues for the current year.
