His father, a soldier in the United States Army left his mother, a school teacher, when Lewis was young and they moved to Moreland, Georgia, where Lewis would spend the rest of his childhood.
Grizzard attended the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.
In accordance with his wishes, he was cremated and some of his ashes were scattered at the 50-yard line of Sanford Stadium at the University of Georgia.

Two people were killed Thursday night when their small plane crashed in heavy fog into a wooded area near Moreland, Georgia, about 40 miles southwest of Atlanta, officials said.
Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager said it's believed the two were the only people aboard the aircraft, which he described as a turboprop.
Yeager said the occupants of the plane had filed a flight plan from Douglas, Georgia, to Coweta.
