The boobook which lives in Australia was originally thought to be the same species as the New Zealand morepork (ruru) but recent research has suggested this species is actually slightly larger than the New Zealand version.
The boobook on Norfolk Island which is also known as the morepork is one of three sub species of the Australian bird.
In 1987 the sub species was down to only one female but with the help of two New Zealand morepork males the population is now well into the double figures.

After surviving a hot spell and an eight meter fall, two Morepork (Ruru) chicks that were kicked out of their nest by their mother are now being hand- reared at the Native Bird Recovery Centre in Whangarei.
The nest was located in a house’s apex of the roof and they were probably kicked out because the female bird was unable to feed all her chicks.
Insects are the Morepork’s most important food, but their diet also includes rats, mice, spiders and small birds.

Though usually active only when dusk has fallen or before daylight, moreporks may sometimes appear in the forest during the day and then run the risk of being noisily mobbed by any songbirds in the vicinity.

I think morepork wants to download only the update.php file and patch/diff - not the whole zip.
I don't think the fact that it's in a zip is the issue here - just that morepork doesn't want to download all the other files.
So you could just put the two files in a zip/targz/tarbz2, and you wouldn't have to worry about server configuration or anything.
