The remarkable large tree to the north of the museum is a Moreton Bay Fig tree, which—like most of the other large trees in the Prado area of Balboa Park—was planted in preparation for the 1915 exposition.
When it is grown in an open area where it can spread, the Moreton Bay Fig may become as much as 150 feet wide; but crowded in its natural forest habitat--or near buildings in an urban setting--it tends to grow tall and narrow.

Yesterday, the fig tree was the subject of a close-up photo in Edhat’s Wednesday Where Is It (WWII) contest.
The tree is reported to be the largest of its species (Moreton Bay Fig) in North America.

Like all figs, the fruit of the Moreton Bay Fig contain hundreds of small flowers inside the "fruit".
You can grow them from seed, but wild trees here are usually sown following the consumption of the fruit by birds or flying foxes (fruit bats).
Yes, they are commonly used here as Bonsai, but you have a loooong wait for a good one.

I was in Santa Barbara, California a year ago this past summer where I collected a large amount of seeds from the city's renowned Moreton Bay Fig Tree.
Some of the Moreton roots are as thick as my torso.
I’d read about the Santa Barbara, Moreton Bay Fig prior to my visit and how the homeless would congregate beneath the thing.

The Moreton Bay Fig is a rainforest tree, and in that habitat it can be a 'strangler fig' - with it's seed setting high in the canopy and it's roots reaching right down to the ground, eventually growing to a stage that strangle it's host and stands alone.
It can grow to 50m with wide buttressed roots.
