Cotaco County was established on February 8, 1818, named for Cotaco Creek (or possibly for a local Indian chief), with its county seat at Somerville.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 30.10% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 12.30% who are 65 years of age or older.
