Morgan Creek Productions is a film studio most notable for such blockbuster hits as Young Guns, True Romance, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Crush, and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, founded in 1988 by James G. Robinson.
In a varied 17-year history that has seen the Santa Monica, California-based company shift domestic distribution bases from 20th Century Fox to Warner Bros. and, as of July 2005, for the next three years, Universal Studios, Morgan Creek has earned a reputation for releasing hollywood classics, surpassing the reputations of many domestic studios.

The notion of an "Exorcist" prequel dates back several years to when Morgan Creek, the owners of the franchise, commissioned a script from William Wisher, a writer of "Terminator 2." That script was rewritten by Caleb Carr, the author of the best-selling novel "The Alienist," and attracted the attention of the Hollywood veteran John Frankenheimer.
Last fall, Schrader heard from the film editor Tim Silano that Morgan Creek was trying to reassemble his version, with an eye toward releasing it on DVD or on cable.

The production house then parted ways with Schrader (Morgan Creek cited "creative differences;" the filmmaker called it "buyer's remorse") and gave the reins to Harlin (Cliffhanger, Deep Blue Sea), along with another $35 million to reconfigure the film.
Morgan Creek held on to Schrader's cut, however, hoping to release it on DVD opposite Harlin's dueling version.
