Sherpa Guides | Georgia | Chattahoochee River | Natural History
Today, this northernmost dam on the river is one of only 50 or so in the country still operating a water-powered mill.
Dams still play an important role in Columbus today, as four in the city and five more to the north provide hydro power and help control floods that traditionally inundated the area.
Dams have been built on the Chattahoochee River since the early 1800s, but construction on the ones that truly changed the face of the river didn't begin until the mid-1950s.

Coppermine Dam on the St. Croix River
Acting on a suggestion from historian Scott Neilsen of Superior, Wisconsin, I visited the remains of the Coppermine Dam which is located several miles downstream of the Gordon Dam on the St. Croix River.
As the severe summer/fall drought brought down the water levels considerably, a fine opportunity presented itself to observe the underpinnings of this rock dam which was built for logging purposes around 1860 – possibly as early as 1853.
Aiding my location of the dam was an aerial photo from the Terraserver site which is shown here.

Largemouth bass are plentiful during the fall on this reservoir.
In the fall, bass often are caught in shallow to medium-depth water near structure and dropoffs in the coves or off the main channel.
Fall is the best time to fish for stripers in Georgia's coastal rivers as they are moving down river as water temperatures change and they are feeding on the abundantly available bait, such as shrimp and menhaden, in estuaries.

Chattahoochee River - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Several lakes, including Lake Lanier, Lake Walter F. George West Point Lake, and others are controlled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, providing hydroelectricity, flood control, drinking water, recreation, and navigation.
Several smaller and older lakes and dams also provide these services on a much smaller and more localized scale, including Bull Sluice Lake and Morgan Falls Dam.
These were the highest levels seen since 1990, and the second highest ever since Buford Dam was built upstream.

Looking back toward the dam, you should also be able to spot the end of a long concrete stilling wall (looks like the K-rail they use for highway dividers) that juts out from the dam.
For those who might be interested in the history of the dam and power plant, it went into service in 1904 and at that time was the largest hydroelectric plant in the southeast, and was a major supply of power to the City of Atlanta.
The lake behind the dam is a lesson in siltation, as the river has built new banks for most of the length of the lake.

URGENT - VIRGINIA - OCCOQUAN RIVER DAM AT OCCOQUAN IN DANGER OF FAILURE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
We had a major dam failure in GA about 20 years ago (again it was an earthen dam not a concrete one) where the local authorities were warned repeatedly that the dam was in poor condition and just ignored it because they didn't want to "cause a panic".
The USACOE investigation found that the dam was in poor condition, but that overtopping was not a factor (they were undecided between a landslip adjoining the dam and "piping" or low level breach of the dam due to tree root infiltration and old abandoned structures in the body of the dam.)
I take it from your post that the dam in question is not a flat faced type like the picture I posted at the top of the thread but rather one with a sloped front that is designed for overtopping.
