A recent study conducted by Morgan Quitno Press found that Winston-Salem was the 39th most dangerous city nationwide, based on the most recently released crime data for 2000.
"We calculated the crime rate using 185,776 as the population of Winston-Salem in 2000, unlike the Morgan Quitno study, which stated that the city’s population in the same year was 176,841," she said.
According to Thomas, the discrepancies between the reported populations used in the three studies are due to the fact that Morgan Quitno figured the estimated population for 2000 from the 1990 Census rather more current estimates of the 2000 population.

So I did a little research into this "Morgan Quitno Press," which, as you may know, can be rearranged to spell "Squirts on a Porn Gem." It seems that this outfit has made a reputation for itself by ranking states according to Livability, Safety, Average Butt Size, etc.
"Morgan Quitno Press" declared that the Safest State - also for six years in a row - was North Dakota.
But "Morgan Quitno Press" is way off base with its state intelligence rankings.

 Report ranks State College 9th safest metropolitan area in U.S.
Despite the increase in the number of reported sexual assaults this year, last year's crime statistics led the State College metropolitan area to be ranked the ninth safest in the country and the safest in Pennsylvania.

According to the ranking by Lawrence, Kan.-based Morgan Quitno Press, Flint is the fourth most dangerous among cities with populations between 100,000 and 499,999, while Sterling Heights is the fifth-safest.
Using FBI crime figures for 2001, Morgan Quitno Press declared Amherst, N.Y., America's safest city for the third year in a row, followed by Brick Township, N.J.; Newton, Mass.; and the California communities of Thousand Oaks and Sunnyvale.
For its methodology, Morgan Quitno plugged crime rates for the six categories per 100,000 population into a formula measuring how a certain city or metropolitan area compared to the national average for a given category.
