Although Morgause remains, even in many modern Arthurian texts, a relatively minor character compared with women like Guinevere and Morgan le Fay, her small role is a crucial one.
She is ultimately a kind of sacrifice in the ongoing feud between the sons of Pellinore and the sons of Lot.
The notable exception to the grand tradition of villanizing Morgause in modern novels is Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Mists of Avalon.
