Morihiro Saito Sensei: Over the course of the seminar I heard people saying, “Iwama-style Aikido is a lot more user friendly than I thought it would be.
I thought Saito Sensei’s style would be more strict and severe.” My motto for teaching is to have a happy practice that clearly demonstrates the day’s lesson, so that students can understand fully and take it back home with them.

Saito Sensei's classes were always full and he enjoyed a reputation as perhaps the finest technician teaching at the Hombu Dojo in those days.
I had of course not seen Saito Sensei since my trip to Japan in 1969 but my interest in his approach to aikido was rekindled when he began the publication of a five-volume technical series titled Traditional Aikido in 1973.
Saito Sensei was hosted by Gaku Homma Sensei of the Nippon Kan. Homma Sensei had spent a short time in Iwama as a teenager and regarded his contact with O-Sensei and Saito Sensei as among his most valuable life experiences.

At the same time, I would hasten to mention that I didn't consider Saito Sensei's technique to be a faithful continuation of the aikido of the founder, but rather regarded him as a technical master in his own right.
Saito Sensei continued to insist that it was his responsibility to faithfully transmit the aikido of the founder and that it was not his intention to develop a "Saito-ryu Aikido."
Saito Sensei laughed and, obviously with great pleasure, bellowed, "See, I told you so!" From that time on (about 1979) even up through this day, Saito Sensei always travels to his aikido seminars with a copy of Budo to use as proof to show that a particular technique originated in the founder's teachings.
