MorleyCallaghan apparently was concerned late in life that people would remember him for one minor achievement: the little Canadian had knocked down the macho Ernest Hemingway in a boxing match refereed by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Callaghan was born, raised and educated in Toronto.
Callaghan's novels and stories of this time (and later) often expose the hypocrisy and injustices of society but they find answers in the individual heart rather than in social or political movements.
Morley's youngest son, Barry, award winning author in his own right, publisher and poet, also has a place in my book collection.
Now included here are images of some literary works by Callaghan that appeared in leading American and Canadian periodicals such as Scribner's Magazine, Esquire, Redbook Magazine, Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, Maclean's, etc. Eventually, there will be images that feature books on or about MorleyCallaghan.
Because MorleyCallaghan's literary work is prodigious - beginning in the mid 1920's till his death in 1990 - I unfortunately do not possess a complete collection of everything that he has written.
During the 1920s he spent time in Paris, where he became friends with Ernest Hemingway, whose influence can be detected in Callaghans spare literary style; he recalls these years in That Summer in Paris (1963).
Callaghans novels and short stories are marked by a concern with religion and Christianity, often focusing on individuals whose essential characteristic is a strong but often unexamined sense of self.
Callaghans later works include The Many Colored Coat (1960), A Passion in Rome (1961), Stories (1967), A Fine and Private Place (1975), A Time for Judas (1983), and Our Lady of the Snows (1985).
Hemingway vs. Callaghan chronicles the friendship between writers Ernest Hemingway and MorleyCallaghan, from their first meeting in the early 1920s at the Toronto Star, to their days as part of Paris' fabled Lost Generation.
Callaghan may not have left the same larger-than-life impression on the people that knew him, but Dunne argues that his writing is as strong as Hemingway's.

In this biography of MorleyCallaghan, Gary Boire celebrates the life of one of the world's most prolific writers.
Author of over twenty novels and a hundred short stories, Callaghan enjoyed a glorious career of international recognition and respect.
His admirers have called him a "professional contrarian, an inveterate counter-puncher." Critics have described him as an "intellectual/personal/literary harlequin." Although a man of contradictions, he was consistent in one thing: be it as novelist, journalist, lawyer, playwright, amateur boxer, sports commentator, or social critic, Callaghan was always engaged with his world.

Morley E. Callaghan was a well known novelist, short-story writer and broadcaster.
Though prolific and successful, Callaghan was so overlooked by the critics for much of his career that Edmund Wilson thought him "the most unjustly neglected writer in the English language." As Hemingway discovered, he could be underestimated as a boxer, too.
