The Mormon War is a name sometimes given to the 1838 conflict which occurred between Latter-day Saints (Mormons) and their neighbors in the northwestern region of the U.S. state of Missouri.
By summer, the Mormon population equalled or exceded the non-Mormon population.
Built along Shoal Creek, Haun's Mill was one of the earliest Mormon settlements in Caldwell County and it was a weigh station on the route from the east to Far West.

February 2, 1848: The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo is signed by the U.S. and Mexico, granting the region of Deseret to the U.S. September 9, 1850: The Great Compromise of 1850 is signed into law, creating the Utah Territory and appointing Brigham Young governor.
September 11, 1857 - A group of Mormons in Southern Utah, led by John D. Lee, attack and kill a group of traveling civilians in the Mountain Meadows Massacre.

The 1838 Mormon war was the culmination of years of violence against Latter-day Saints, who had been driven from two states before Missouri and had been driven from two counties within Missouri.
The so-called "Mormon War" would culminate in the imprisonment of Mormon leaders, a genuine massacre of Mormon settlers at Haun's Mill, and the issuance of an inhumane extermination order from the Governor of Missouri authorizing the expulsion or extermination of Mormons.
Crimes against the Mormons were largely ignored, while the Mormons were loudly accused of treason, murder, etc. The Saints experience in 1833 taught them that if they were to survive and maintian their land, their defense was in their own hands.
