Various Artists: KCRW-Morning Becomes Eclectic ---Ink Blot Magazine
Santa Monica college station KCRW is the home of "Morning Becomes Eclectic," arguably one of the most influential radio programs in America.
Begun by then music director Tom Schnabel, MBE made its name mixing world music with more traditional college fare; under Schnabel's successor Chris Douridas, the show came to national prominence as an industry taste-maker, even featuring Beck as a guest before he was signed.
"Morning Becomes Eclectic" is slowly becoming one of the most revered radio programs in the entire United States.

In Music We Trust - Morning Becomes Eclectic -- live from the KCRW Studios
KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic radio show (heard weekdays, 9am to noon Pacific Standard Time) prides itself on exposing audiences to an eclectic mix of music; from pop to trip-hop, rock to jazz, and everything in between, the show isn't afraid to play music they enjoy -- music they're sure their listeners will enjoy, too.

 Spinning an eclectic morning
"Morning Becomes Eclectic attempts to present the best new music that is coming out around the world and infuse it with the best of the old as well, reaching back into the vaults on a daily basis--to flesh out the new alongside those that have come before it," MBE host Douridas said.
That is one of the reasons MBE is a morning staple for many listeners.
The show's eclecticism extends not only to the diversity of the music they play, but to the daily mix of that music.

In the fall of 2003, Hoop was living in a van in Sonoma County, 35 miles north of San Francisco, when late one morning she was awakened by a call on her cellphone.
''Morning Becomes Eclectic,'' and KCRW as a whole, are renowned for purveying the contemporary music equivalent of art-house films or literary fiction, a genre the rock critic Robert Christgau calls ''semipopular'' music, marked less by style than by a certain base-line intelligence and tastefulness.
Harcourt, who just celebrated his seventh anniversary on ''Morning Becomes Eclectic,'' is more than just the latest incarnation of this figure.

AMZ - November, 1999 - Morning Becomes Eclectic
Los Angeles based NPR station KCRW has long hosted a popular morning music show called "Morning Becomes Eclectic," attracting both critical and commercial favorites to its studios for interviews and live performances.
More importantly, "eclectic" suggests diversity, and this collection is too overloaded with world-weary singer-songwriters (PJ Harvey, Joe Henry) and oddball pop acts (Buffalo Girls, Pink Martini) to come close to achieving that status.
It's not the first time music from "Morning Becomes Eclectic" has been compiled and released on CD - four previous discs of material were put out under the moniker "Rare On Air." It won't be the last time, either, as Mammoth has plans to make a series of releases out of "Morning Becomes Eclectic," offerings.

Pink Martini produces a highly creepy and unsettling version of "Que Sera Sera," taking the fatalistic old song to new unapproachable lows, and Buffalo Daughter adds "Socks, Drugs & Rock 'n' Roll" which, as the name might imply, is just plain stupid.
However, for a promotional compilation, Morning Becomes Eclectic is quite appropriately named.
There are plenty of twists and turns along this album, and some musical doorways might even be wedged open in the minds of the compact-disc beholder.
