A branch was opened of the Gippsland Railway from Caulfield to Mordialloc in 1881 and Frankston in 1882.
The vision was to reopen it as a heritage railway, focusing on the operation of steam-hauled passenger trains.

The railway was originally one of four experimental narrow gauge lines of the Victorian Railways opened around the beginning of the 20th century.
The railway aims to preserve the line as far as possible as it was in the first three decades of its existence, but with particular emphasis on the early 1920s.
Today the railway operates daily (except for Christmas day) as a popular tourist activity over 15 miles (24km) with original steam engines, and is operated with some of the railway practices from the Victorian Railways 1900 to 1930 era, such as using the "Staff and Ticket" safeworking method and having conductors on board the trains.

 Walhalla Goldfields Railway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The railway was expected to be a boon for the town, which was in a state of economic and population decline due to gold mining operations becoming increasingly uneconomical, the largest gold mining company closing in 1914.
The railway was closed in sections from 1944-54, the section from Platina to Walhalla closing in March 1944 and the final section from Moe to Erica eventually closing on June 25th 1954.
While the railway has drawn some uninformed criticism for deviation from historical accuracy regarding its rolling stock, the collection is a significant piece of industrial railway history, and the WGR provides a valuable tourist train service for the local economy.

WHO ARE WE The Mornington Railway (MR) is managed and operated by dedicated volunteers.
The Mornington Railway Preservation Society (MRPS), which is the not-for-profit incorporated association that manages the MR, was formed out of a public meeting in 1984 with the objective of securing access to the then-closed Mornington railway line.
Outside the railway, some of us are employed full-time; others are retired, on benefits, or still at school.

A 7km long 2ft (610mm) gauge tourist railway is part of a railway originally built to carry limestone and is situated 113km south of Hobart on the A6 Huon Highway and uses a mixture of (mainly) diesel and steam.
The railway is spectacularly scenic and rises steeply along tightly curved grades hugging the hillside with views across the Goulburn valley and King Parrot Creek valley, reaching summit points via the switch back culminating in a 300 degree panorama of the whole valley as described.

Distinguished by being the first railway preservation effort in Australia, the railway has grown from humble volunteer beginnings in the late 1950s to become a fully operational and professional railway system.

A siding previosly existed to the HMAS Cerbrus naval base from Crib Point which was since used to store rolling stock for the Mornington Railway Preservation Society however these tracks were removed in the late 1990s.
Stony Point is the furthest location from central Melbourne still considered as part of the suburban public transport system of which a 'Zone 3' ticket applies.
