Mount Moroto Lies in the extreme east of Uganda and is the most accessible place to see some of the dry northeastern " special ", many at the western edge of their ranges here in Karamoja province.
Although a long hike is required to reach the higher areas, excellent arid thorn savanna and rocky slopes are accessible from the town at the foot of the mountain.
Moroto can be reached from Mbale either via Soroti (90 km tarmarc, or 170 km 2 WD dirt, drive time required 6 hours) or via the direct eastern route (230 km.

Moroto Forest Reserve is perched on top of the escarpment of the Eastern Rift, east of Moroto town; its eastern boundaries are also those of the Ugandan border with Kenya.
The upper parts of Mt Moroto are forested, but the reserve extends a considerable distance into savannas of various types, including Combretum woodlands, as well as bushland and tree/shrub steppe.
There is an old record from the slopes of Mt. Moroto and specimens were collected at the foot of the mountains in 1958 and in the early 1960s (Collar and Stuart 1988).

 MP spends Christmas night in police cell
Moroto and councillor, Mr Jacob Samuli, were picked up by heavily armed security agents in seven police vehicles for allegedly inciting the Pokot community to invade farms in Trans Nzoia District.
Moroto was driven to Kees Primary School where Trans Nzoia DC Christopher Musumbu was waiting.
Moroto also reportedly told the community to invade the Agricultural Development Corporation farms in Trans Nzoia District, claiming that they owned the district.

Moroto Grade Two Magistrate Jolly Onyang sent the students on remand on Friday after they denied the charges.

Kapenguria MP Samuel Moroto led armed Pokot warriors to invade Kanyarkwat farm on the volatile border between West Pokot and Trans-Nzoia Districts, the Government said yesterday.

Elsewhere, Ikolomani MP Bonny Khalwale yesterday said Moroto’s arrest was necessary to avert tribal clashes between the Luhya and Pokot communities.

Moroto United, a team comprising young stars mainly drawn from Moroto, Nakapipirit, Kotido and Kaabong districts, dictated the pace of the match for the better part of the second half.

Teachers and administrators in Moroto district in the remote north east of the country say the Alternative Basic Education for Karamoja (ABEK) programme was slow to get off the ground, but will soon see the Karamojong pastoralists catch up with the rest of Uganda.
In addition to offering food to families in a region plagued by drought, the ABEK programme is flexible, giving the children plenty of daytime to look after cows, a traditional activity sacred to Karamoja's pastoral communities.

Karamoja, once a province in its own right, is a notoriously volatile region comprising Moroto and Kotido districts in the arid northeast of the country.
Since the late 1970s, when Karamajong warriors broke into an army barracks in Moroto District, firearms have replaced the traditional spear, while many of the raids are no longer conducted under the authority of elders.
The meeting, reportedly headed by Vice President Wandera Specioza Kazibwe, was prompted by an attack by the Jie tribe in Kotido District in July on a military convoy, which was on a mission to recover cows stolen from the Matheniko by the Jie.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni witnessed the excercise in Moroto and "thanked the people of Karamoja for responding positively to his call to voluntarily hand over illegal guns in their possession," the statement said.
Cows are at the centre of the Karamojong value system and cattle rustling is a way of life, with the animals secured used by young men to secure the bride price required to marry.

The 90-to-110-pound animal was the earliest to develop shoulders that would allow it to swing from branches, though it probably moved on all fours when on the ground, the team of scientists said.
Morotopithecus, named for the Moroto area of Uganda where the fossils were found, was closely related to modern apes and humans.
In 1994-95, the researchers revisited the area, uncovering new fossils that led them to the conclusion that they had found a new type of primitive ape.

According to Webster, they originally lived near Mt. Moroto, from which they moved west to the plain between Napak and Elgon before being defeated and scattered by the Karimojong in 1830.
According to Wilson, people considering themselves Oropom are (as of 1970) particularly concentrated within the Karamoja area in Matheniko and Jie counties, and to a lesser extent in Bokora; some are also found among the Tepes people of Moroto and the Kadam Mountains.
Others are found in Pian county, notably at Lorengedwat.

The CHIPS project which has operated in 3 different places in Katakwi and Moroto for the last 9 years, opened the current base at Lomaratoit in 1997.
This place was void of any human beings; there was only wild game and an old engine pump which was used in the late 1960s, and it was believed that the place was a conduit route for Karamojong rustlers.
That this has been possible is due both to the bravery and determination of the CHIPS Team Members in Uganda as well as to the prayers and financial generosity of CHIPS supporters in UK.

"Moroto" comes from the place in Uganda where the creature's bones were found, "pithecus" means "apelike." "Bishopi" honors William Bishop, a British geologist who first found bones and teeth from this ape.
The fossils from Moroto seem to be an odd mixture of features from both modern and primitive apes.
Morotopithecus didn't evolve directly into gibbons, orangutans, gorillas, and chimps, but he came from the same ancestors who did.
