Morphine's aesthetic of brooding "low rock" intensity, familiar to past albums, remains constant in "The Night." Each song, beginning with the title track, sets forth the melancholy vocals of Sandman hovering over minimalist string arrangements.
Morphine performs and writes its characteristic "low rock" sound so well that the band seldom strays or ventures to explore the possibilities of other sounds.
Morphine's brand of overdone minimalism is sung (over and over again) in lyrics such as, "Like a mirror, I'm nothing till you look at me," making it difficult to listen to "The Night" with anything more than passive interest.

Morphine: The Best of Morphine 1992-1995 - PopMatters Music Review
Yet this Boston trio, who dubbed themselves Morphine, managed to create a sound all their own over the 10 years they were together, fusing rock, jazz, and soul like no other band before or since.
As much as fans loved Morphine back in the '90s, their albums, aside from 1993's stellar Cure For Pain, sometimes sounded a bit spotty, but they were never short of great moments, so a best-of compilation really works well in Morphine's case, giving us a solid hour's worth of great music.
Their signature tune, "Buena", is a no-brainer choice, as the band perfectly executes the bass-sax-drums formula, while the deceptively gorgeous "Cure For Pain" actually delves into R&B, possessing a real pop hook in its melody, as well as some Motown-style sax playing by Colley.

The instruments in the band were merely a two-string electric bass played with a slide, a baritone saxophone or two, and some drums.
The band consists of Mark Sandman on bass and vocals, Billy Conway on drums, and Dana Colley on saxophones.
Morphine then released Yes in 1995, which is even catchier than "Cure for Pain." Coupled with Sandman's poetic lyrics, tracks such as "Sharks" and "Super Sex" offer a glimpse of the band's live energy.

In theory, Morphine's instrumentation sounds interesting, but not all that appealing: it seems as though without more traditional elements like guitar, the band's music would be missing some essential ingredient.
The band's lyrics, all written by Sandman, sketch the outlines of a situation rather than telling the whole story: a woman's laugh, a glimpse of someone across a smoky room, a party winding down in the early hours.
I thought the band's songwriting was strongest on their first couple of albums, with more compelling images and turns of phrase.

While their 1992 debut introduced a band with an intriguing sound and an unusual line-up, the album also failed to be entirely satisfying.
Perhaps the band realized it themselves, perhaps they received signals from their fans or the music press, but this album is much more full-bodied than the previous one, with both the bass and sax way more upfront, sounding warm, sometimes even dirty, and, most importantly: exciting.
It may not be their loudest album (insofar ‘loudest’ and ‘Morphine’ could ever fit in the same sentence), but it sure offers some nice thrills, as well as more modest tracks that are surprisingly touching on their own.

The decision to tour Morphine's final album, completed before Sandman's untimely demise on stage in Italy last summer, despite the absence of the singer who lent them so much of their personality has let the remaining members of the band in for a certain amount of criticism.
Unlike the teary McConnell show last spring, Orchestra Morphine's show proved to be more of a forward-looking tribute to their departed friend than a reflective memorial.
Although there were certainly aspects of the latter evident in the band's performance, the overall effect was of steeling oneself to move onwards while bringing the best aspects of the past along.

The singer/bassist/soul behind Boston's Morphine left a trail of ash and smoke with his band's smoldering catalogue of "low rock."
