Image processing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The extraction of arbitrary information from images is the domain of image analysis, which includes pattern recognition when the patterns to be identified are in images.
The tools and concepts of image processing are also relevant to image synthesis from more abstract models, which is a major branch of computer graphics.
Specialized hardware is still used for digital image processing: computer architectures based on pipelining have been the most commercially successful, but many different massively parallel architectures were developed as well.

Morphological image processing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A collection of techniques for digital image processing based on Mathematical morphology.
Since these techniques rely only on the relative ordering of pixel values, not on their numerical values, they are especially suited to the processing of binary images and grayscale images whose light transfer function is not known.
By combining these operators one can obtain algorithms for many image processing tasks, such as feature detection, image segmentation, image sharpening, image filtering, granulometry and distance transforms.

Because the morphological operations can serve as a universal language for image processing, their application is only limited by the ability to design effective algorithms and efficient computational implementation.
The third and fourth chapters discuss the processing of binary images, the third focusing on applications of the primary operators, and the fourth on the hit-or-miss transform, which processes an image directly in terms of the foreground-background relation.
Morphological image processing is based on probing an image with structuring elements, and these determine the relationships within image structure that an algorithm can ascertain.

The image is eroded in the sense that there are fewer pixels “on”; than in the original image.
To dilate the image, whenever the origin pixel in the kernel K aligns with an image pixel that is “on”;, the output image pixels corresponding to the kernel are turned “on”.
Image shapes can be isolated by first eroding then dilating the image as shown in Figure 4.

ABSTRACT This paper describes a novel approach to color image morphing which is based on the combination of morphological image processing tools and linear filtering.
In the proposed method the morphing engine is provided by the morphological interpolation by means of the morphological median.
By the successive generation of morphological medians using an algorithm proposed in the paper, the sequence transforming one input image into another one is produced.
