The valley of Morphou was developed quickly, due to its fertility and abundance of underground waters.
Fifty one percent of Cyprus citrus fruit was grown during 1974 in Morphou and the surrounding villages of Zodia, Argaki, Katokopia, Prasteo, Sirianochoroi, Nikita, Karavostasi, Kira, and Kapouti.
Since August 16, 1974 the whole area of Morphou has been occupied by the Turks, and "she" sighs heavily, as do the other areas of Cyprus that are under Turkish occupation.

MORPHOU refugees told UN Secretary General Kofi Annan this week that the present situation in Cyprus is totally unacceptable and a disgrace to humanity.
Morphou Mayor Charalambos Pittas highlighted the property issue in his speech to the rally, accusing the US and UK of tolerating what goes on in the occupied areas.
Held at Astromeritis, close to the occupied town of Morphou, the 26th anti-occupation rally was attended by delegations from the European, British, French and Greek parliaments and Mayors and Councillors from the UK, Greece, Malta, Switzerland and France.

Morphou is located in the northwest side of Cyprus, 30 miles from Nicosia.
In 1974 Morphou was invaded by the Turkish troops, who forced its residents away, and since then keep the town under their occupation, forbidding the Greek Cypriots from visiting their houses their orchards, and the soil that buries their ancestors.

The town of Morphou fell to the advancing Turkish troops on 16 August 1974 as the invading forces launched their second offensive against Cyprus on 14 August, which also resulted in the capture of the Karpass peninsula, Famagusta on the east and the fertile valley of Messaoria, in the center of the island.
Both diplomats were speaking as they received a protest petition from the elected representatives of the Turkish-occupied area of Morphou, led by mayor Antigoni Papadopoulou to mark the 26tanniversary since the town was captured by the advancing Turkish troops in the wake of the second offensive in the summer of August 1974.

 Bishop of Morphou thrown out of his own church
TURKISH Cypriot ‘police’ yesterday expelled Bishop Neophytos of Morphou from a church in the occupied areas where he was holding a service for a group of faithful who had crossed over with him.
Morphou Mayor Charalambos Pittas told reporters that the incident “was added proof of the intransigent positions of the Turkish Cypriot leader”.
Bishop Neophytos has said he would like to resume residence in Morphou, even under Turkish occupation, and that he felt it was important for Turkish Cypriots to get used to the clerical robe, which for them carried so many negative connotations from the past.
