National Review: Throttlebottom's legacy - playwrights George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind, 'Of Thee I Sing'
Stung by the censorship, Kaufman and Ryskind vowed that their next project would be free of interference, even if this meant financing it themselves.
Thus it was a particularly nectareous occasion when, with the world press there to record the event, Ryskind went to collect his Pulitzer from the man who then served as ceremonial head of the Pulitzer Committee-the President of Columbia, his old friend Nicholas Murray Butler.
For Morrie Ryskind, however, FDR's 1940 decision to abrogate the Washington-Jefferson two-term tradition marked the end of civilization as he knew it, and in reaction he registered as a Republican and threw himself into the Wendell Willkie campaign.

 Hollywood Ten Were Stalin's Stooges -- America's Future -- Week of February 2, 1998
Ryskind is the son of playwright Morrie Ryskind, who willingly testified in 1947 against communist infiltration of the Screen Writers Guild.
The younger Ryskind summarizes the mendacious mythology manufactured for these celluloid subversives: "Ten members of the movie colony -- men bursting with innocence and idealism -- were suddenly hauled before the wicked House Committee on Un-American Activities, where they were pilloried for their 'progressive' views by publicity-hungry, bigoted, venal politicians.
Ryskind argues that support for the Hitler-Stalin pact reveals the "true character" of the Hollywood Ten and other members of the American Communist Party.

Book by George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind, music by George Gershwin, lyrics by Ira Gershwin.
In Of Thee I Sing, shrewd allusions and jabs – to P.T. Barnum, agricultural policies, the Constitution, Paul Revere's horse – flow as liberally as the booze in the politicians&Mac226; flasks, and writers George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind and lyricist Ira Gershwin roast America's electoral shenanigans with an unfailing eye for the madcap.
And although it was written during the Depression, its humor and entertainment value (as director Lynette Miller remarks in her program notes) aren't escapist – they&Mac226;re barbed, wise, and irreverent, always mindful of the world outside the proscenium.

Of the non-Hart collaborations, only "Animal Crackers" is genuinely funny, and one senses that Kaufman and Ryskind had relatively little to do with its laughs.

Filled with catchy Jazz-Age tunes, sprightly show-stopping dances, and an almost ridiculous story about corruption in the Halls of Power, "Of Thee I Sing" is one of the Gershwin Bros. funniest and sunniest works for the stage.
Kaufman and Ryskind's book combined with George Gershwin's sweeping music and Ira's clever lyrics made "Of Thee I Sing" a highlight of the 1931 Broadway season.
The New York Times declared it "the happiest and most successful native music-stage lampoon to come the way of the American stage." The show went on to win the first Pulitzer Prize for Drama ever awarded to a musical and played for 441 performances, a record at that time.

Of Thee I Sing, a CurtainUp review
But leave it to a 1931 musical cartoon about depression era presidential and vice-presidential elections by George S. Kaufman & Morrie Ryskind, with delectably hummable and sardonic songs by George Gershwin & Ira Gershwin, to skewer the flimflam with wit and humor.
Director Landau has wisely refrained from tinkering with this but has allowed the show remain true to what it is, letting the Kaufman and Ryskind script make its own case for its timeliness and endurance -- and its depressing parallels to today's politics.
While Hillary Clinton refused to be seen as a cookie-baking presidential mate, the current race might just be close enough for Teresa Heinz Kerry or Laura Bush to pull out their muffin pans.
