History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
Already famous for his designs of the Morris Minor and Mini, BMC automotive design genius Sir Alec Issigonis, with assistance from PininFarina in Italy, based the 1100 on his previous design for the Mini ("ADO-15").
The 1100, designated "ADO-16," for Austin Design Office Project No.16, was first introduced by the British Motor Corporation as the Morris 1100 Mk1 and was available as a four door model.
Due to their success, popularity and high demand, the cars were built in several other countries, including Italy(producing the Morris Innocenti IM3), South Africa(producing the Austin Apache), Spain(producing the Authi Victoria), and Australia (producing the Morris 1100 Mk1, Morris 1500 and Nomad wagon versions).

 Morris 1100 & 1300 1962-1971 - Phil Seed's Virtual Car museum
The Morris 1100 (and its sister car, the Austin 1100) were very popular in their day.
The Morris 1100, like its smaller sister, the Mini, was designed with a tranverse engine and front wheel drive, which gave the car lots of space for the passengers and their luggage, and of course great roadholding.
The Austin 1100 models, introduced in September 1963, differed from the Morris version only in that the typical Austin grille (eight ‘wavy’ bars) and a different facia panel layout were adopted.

 Morris 1100 - Motorbase
The Morris 1100 took the original Mini design concept another stage further, it made its debut in 1962, one year before the near identical Austin version.
Initially the 1100 came only as a 4 door saloon, however this was quickly joined by a 2 door and a 2 door estate car known as the "Traveller".
In 1967 a MKII 1100 was announced which introduced a new front grille, rear wings, rear lamps and revised trim.

Morris Motor Company - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The small car market was entered in 1928, with the Morris Minor, using an 847 cc engine from the Wolseley Motor Company, a company which became part of MMC in 1927 when William Morris bought it, and this helped get them through the depression years.
The Minor was replaced at the 1934 London Motor Show by the Morris Eight, a direct response to the Ford Model Y and heavily based on it.
The Morris marque was used until the early 1980s on cars such as the Morris Marina.

The Princess 1100 was based on the MG 1100 (launched in October 1962), having that model's 55bhp engine and 4-door body-shell.
Thus, the Princess 1100 was produced from 1963-1967 in mkI form, and from 1967-1968 in mkII form (with different rear wing profiles and lights, and modified upholstery).
Next, in 1963, came the Austin 1100 and Vanden Plas Princess 1100, with the range of models being completed by the addition of the Wolseley 1100 and Riley Kestrel in 1965.

 Morris 1100 and 1300
Another Alec Issigonis success story, the Morris 1100 was the saloon version of the already hugely popular mini.
Badge re-engineering was popular for British cars of the time, and the Morris 1100 was to find a home with other manufacturers such as Austin, Riley, Wolseley, MG and even Vanden Plas.
Due to the large number manufactured, the car is at the lower end of collectability, however models such as the GT and others released by makers such as Vandan Plas that have leather trim and the mandatory picnic tables are becoming much sought after and make a good investment.

It was considerably cheaper for BMC to continue to produce the Morris Minor than to develop a replacement car.
Even though it was occupying the same market as the Morris 1100 for most of the sixties, the Minor reigned supreme.
A quick trip to a cashpoint at the Birmingham Natwest brought up only £100, but emptying the savings account, using all the petty cash and taking the spare 10p on top of the payphone there was just enough to send the Marina to Ital Design for a tarting up.
