It has been said that the Morris Minor is the car that typifies "Englishness" and yet the designer was the son of a Greek father and a German mother, and the style was based on current American cars.
Morris Motors unquestionably had the finest small car in the world with the Minor, it was one of the first cars in its field to handle well.
The Morris Minor was the brainchild of Alec Issigonis, born in Smyrna Turkey in 1906.

 Light cars from Cowley
The light cars produced at Cowley during the early nineteen thirties were a second MINOR model made between 1931 and 1934, further COWLEY models, 1931,1932 to 33,1934 to 35, the TEN-Four 1933 to 35, and the TEN-SIX Morris's contribution to the 1930's fashion for small six cylinder cars.
The Morris MINI MINOR was produced at Cowley and the Austin SE7EN was produced at Longbridge, Birmingham.
The Morris versions of the 1100 and 1300 were produced until 1971.The Austin MAXI was also produced at Cowley from 1969 until 1979.

Cowley has been the Oxford home of the automobile industry for close on a century, during which the car production facility has undergone changes of ownership from Morris to Austin Morris, to British Leyland (BL) and finally to BMW.
The Cowley plant was established by William Morris in 1913 when he branched out on his own from previous partnerships and set up on his own as a vehicle repairer.
Finally, though Morris claimed to have no interest in advertising, he was quick to maximise good publicity when the opportunity arose through brand logos, the encouragement of the Morris owners' club and the launch of his own newspaper through the Nuffield Press.

The Cowley 1500 was yet another disastrous BMC attempt at producing a budget family saloon despite the improved 55bhp engine.
The Cowley 1500 came with the usual 4 speed manual gearbox although a semi-automatic transmission was also available as an option.
The Cowley 1500 could be distinguished by its restyled Oxford type bonnet redesigned rear wings which incorporated daring, vestigial fins to add a touch of glamour.

Morris was managing director, the Earl of Macclesfield, holding £4000 of preference shares, took the title of president.
Morris had shrewdly studied the mass-production techniques behind the success of the Model T Ford, and decided to go a step further – by farming out the manufacture of most of the components to specialist suppliers.
Cowley also made a huge range of other contributions to the war effort, including production, (on Britain’s first aircraft assembly flow-line), of 3200 Tiger Moth trainers, assembly and overhaul of Merlin engines for Beaufighters and Lancaster bombers as well as construction of airframe sections for a variety of other aircraft.

William Morris had a flair for using his hands with a keen interest in all things mechanical, which was evident when he purchased his first bicycle, for he was forever taking it apart and reassembling it.
The Morris 8, introduced in 1935, updated 1936 (series 1), updated 1937 (series 2) and updated 1938 (series E) was the most popular car prewar, no doubt due to it having hydraulic brakes and other advanced features the competitors did not see fit to introduce until after the war.
Morris believed that the small car market was the best area to start after the war and he had the now famous Morris Minor designed.

When William Morris went over to the USA in the early years of the last century to confirm orders for the Continental Red-Seal engine which he needed for his factory, he imported more than he bargained for.
These early Morris cars in the shape of the pre-WW1 Morris Cowley, had a very unusual method for checking the sump oil quantity.
By the time Cecil Kimber came onto the scene, when he began modifying the bull-nose Morris Oxford and the smaller Cowley, all Morris engines had a dip-stick to assist the owner to monitor the car's oil consumption.

Like Austin over in Longbridge, Morris was expanding their range, although in the case of Morris it was downward to meet the challenge of producing a rival to the Austin Seven.
However, with Herbert Austin long since dead it meant that William Morris would be at the head of BMC at the time of its formation, but he soon stepped down as Chairman to become a non-executive President of the company, thus leaving Leonard Lord to call the shots in the Corporation.
Morris design at Cowley was slowly wound-down piece by piece and the Austin Drawing Office at Longbridge would eventually handle all design work from the end of the 1950s when the Farina designed cars came on stream: all subsequent cars developed by BMC would have ADO (Austin Drawing Office) development tags.

The initials MG, used in the MG name, actually stand for Morris Garages, which in the early 1920’s was the name of the Oxford distributor of Morris cars.
By 1924, Morris Garages were advertising an MG Special four-seater Sports model, which was the first to display the now famous octagonal MG badge.
In 1929 Morris Garages moved its business to Abingdon in Oxfordshire, this being the third premises they occupied in eight years, by which time the company had been renamed as the MG Car Company.

At £395, the four-seater with the 14hp Morris Oxford engine was an elegant vehicle with body panels partly in polished aluminum and offset by wheel discs.
The SA model, introduced at the 1935 Motor Show, was a comfortable six-cylinder sports saloon and drophead coupé with a two-litre engine (soon enlarged to 2.3-litres), which for elegance and performance was a close competitor of the contemporary Jaguar.

To that effect, the Cowley works fashioned a taillight that has about a thumb sized marker that they located all the way down against the road (fitted into the license plate) - the one and only sure security against rear collision.
An old Morris lorry's clutch (which was exactly the same except for needle roller bearings) replaced the car's broken one.
