Morris K. Udall was an outstanding individual who made invaluable contributions to environmental and human rights legislation in this country.
This is at least partly why Morris Udall's introduction and passage of numerous bills and acts involving the preservation of significant wilderness areas is so important.
Udall's work toward legislation that requires the reclamation of this land that has been strip-mined and surface-mined is certainly an ecological necessity and among his most important work.

Udall, 76, whose wry sense of humor was apparent in his 1988 book, "Too Funny To Be President," died at the U.S. Veterans Medical Center in Washington.
Known as "Mo," Udall was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1961 in a special election to replace his brother, Stewart Udall, who President Kennedy had tapped as Secretary of the Interior.
Udall was born June 15, 1922, in St. Johns, Arizona, one of six children in a pioneer Mormon family.

The Morris K. Udall Parkinson's Research, Education and Assistance Act was introduced on April 6, 1995, by Senator Mark 0.
Congressman Udall contended for the Democratic nomination for President in 1976 and, although he finished second to Jimmy Carter, he gained widespread respect and affection for his grace and courage.
The Udall bill was developed after determining that the current NIH research program needed a major expansion, and the bill's program was designed with extensive involvement of premier Parkinson's researchers nationwide.

Udall could not have found a better colleague to cosponsor the Alaska initiative, and this, too, attests to his deep understanding of people and politics.
Udall's unsuccessful campaigns in 1976 and '80 for Democratic nominee for president often drew inspiration and, I suspect, relief from his frequent delving into his legendary fl notebooks of political stories.
It is worth noting that Morris Udall died while members of his beloved Congress and the administration had advanced initiatives to conserve land and enhance recreation.

LEXINGTON, VA -- Andrew Fotinos, a junior politics major and athlete at Washington and Lee University, is one of 80 undergraduates in the country awarded a scholarship from the Morris K. Udall Foundation, which was established by Congress to honor the late Arizona Democrat and environmental activist.
Udall, a highly productive member of the House of Representatives for 30 years, led efforts to establish the Alaska Lands Act of 1980, which doubled the size of the national park system and tripled the size of the national wilderness system.
Udall was the author of bills signed into law concerning campaign reform and congressional ethics.
