The Marina was a model of car manufactured by the Morris division of British Leyland throughout the 1970s, a period of great turbulence and difficulty for the British car industry.
In Australia, it was known as the Leyland Marina, in New Zealand as the Morris 1700 (for 1979–81, in facelifted form), and in South Africa as the Austin Marina.
In Denmark, the Morris Marina name was used for a badge-engineered version of the (Morris 1100) in the early- to mid-(1960s).

Marina burst from the side of her crate just in time to see a small fl figure, wearing a ski mask, race - with incredible speed - to the center of the warehouse and throw a rifle, with a telescopic sight and a large silencer, onto the floor beside the bodies.
Marina raised her gun, attempting to fire at the fleeing figure, but it was already out of sight around the corner in the hallway leading to the front door.
Marina stared at the four corpses heaped in the center of the warehouse, and her eyes moistened with tears.

Because of the huge cast iron Triumph gearbox the Marina has, there are two strong lugs welded to the base of the Marina's sump, that bolt to the bottom of its improved Triumph Herald gearbox.

As envisaged at the beginning of the accelerated development programme, the Morris Marina would provide BLMC a perfect competitor in the fleet market and if you were an optimist in the company at the time, the feeling was that the Marina offered nearly everything the Cortina did, but in a more compact package.
Because sales of the Morris Marina had never lived up to the heady expectations of it made during its development, the decision was made that the new car should follow the Cortina upmarket into the 2-litre class.
As it was, sales of the Marina continued to hold up well during the Seventies, generally holding third or fourth in the UK sales charts, but it did not disguise the fact that marketing-led development was no substitute for genuine product development and as time went on, the Marina's shortcomings were becoming increasingly evident.

 Morris 1100 & 1300 1962-1971 - Phil Seed's Virtual Car museum
The Morris 1100 (and its sister car, the Austin 1100) were very popular in their day.
The Morris 1100, like its smaller sister, the Mini, was designed with a tranverse engine and front wheel drive, which gave the car lots of space for the passengers and their luggage, and of course great roadholding.
The Austin 1100 models, introduced in September 1963, differed from the Morris version only in that the typical Austin grille (eight ‘wavy’ bars) and a different facia panel layout were adopted.

The Morris Marina, sold there as the Leyland Marina (in saloon and coupe forms only) instead used the OHC E-Series motors, in 1500 cc and 1750 cc.
Additionally, as an ill-advised competitor to the Holden Torana and Ford Cortina 6 models, the Marina was also offered with a 121 hp (90 kW) 2600 cc engine.

It took its name from Giorgetto Giugiaro's ItalDesign studio, who had been employed by British Leyland to manage the re-engineering of Morris Marina (produced since 1971).
The Ital had distinctly different exterior detailing to the Marina, but retained its 1.3 and 1.7 petrol engines and rear-wheel drive chassis which could be traced back to the 1948 Morris Minor.

The story of the Morris Marina in motorsport is very much one of missed opportunities, caused mainly by inept management of a talented team of engineers.
