Topic: Morris Stoloff

 Morris Stoloff
After studying with Leopold Auer for several years, Stoloff was touring the U.S. as a featured soloist at the age of 16, and joined the L.A. Philharmonic a year later as its youngest member ever.
During his time at Columbia, Stoloff worked with composers ranging from Stravinsky (pairing him up with a young David Raksin to keep the old master contained within the limits of the click track) to John Williams (whose father, a former jazz drummer, was already working for Stoloff as a studio musician).
Stoloff was not entirely selfless in his approach.

Morris Stoloff was the musical director for the film and two of the featured songs were the "Theme From Picnic" written by George Duning (Steve Allen wrote the lyrics) and a tune from the early thirties called "Moonglow".
The interesting thing about that feat is that it was accomplished by two musicians that had a somewhat anonymous career for many years, hit the spotlight for one hit record, and then retreated once again mostly behind the record scene.
Stoloff began his distinguished career in motion pictures soon after the advent of sound pictures in the late twenties.

The score was recorded October 14, 22 and 26, 1964, with Morris Stoloff conducting.
Stoloff had served as music director at Columbia Studios (where he gave Williams a job as a pianist in the studio orchestra) and in 1964 was music director of Reprise Records, Sinatra's record label.
The theme to None But the Brave was issued on a 45 RPM single (Reprise 0339) at the time of the film's release; it features a chorus (identified as The Jack Halloran Singers) and orchestra under the direction of Morris Stoloff.

 From Here To Eternity
Robert E. Lee Prewitt, Burt Lancaster as a sergeant who is romancing the captain's wife (Deborah Kerr), Frank Sinatra as Prew's best friend, and Donna Reed as a hostess at a local social club who falls in love with Prew.
Morris Stoloff musical directs with his usual sensitivity and he also contributed top-notch big-band orchestrations for the source music in the social club and the local Army bar.
One memorable scene occurs in the bar as Prew shows how to really play the bugle by improvising during the recording of "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" playing in the background.

 George Duning
Duning served in the Navy during WWII, and upon his discharge went back to work at Columbia where we worked as an adaptor, orchestrator, arranger, musical director, or composer on hours of uncredited stock music that he wrote for the Columbia archives.
He received his first Academy Award nomination in 1949 for his work with regular collaborator Morris Stoloff on Jolson Sings Again.
But it is for two memorable scenes in From Here To Eternity and Picnic that Duning's work will live on.

 JO ANN GREER
The recording by Jo Ann Greer of Put the Blame on Mame was released (or reissued anyway) on an lp or cassette I got back in the early 80's called Morris Stolloff in Hollywood or Morris Stolloff Conducts songs from his movies.
Unfortunately Morris Stoloff recorded a new version of "Put the blame on Mame" in 1959 with Anita Ellis not Jo Ann Greer; title of this long-playing and/or cassette is : SOUNDTRACKS,VOICES AND THEMES FROM GREAT MOVIES by Morris Stoloff.
Also, Jo Ann had been dubbing for Rita during the fifties and Morris Stolloff probably worked with her more during that period.
