Udall had a gift for never giving into the pompous self-importance that seems to end up infecting the majority of men who spend most of their lives in government.

The award is named in honor of former Arizona Congressman Morris K. Udall, regarded as the father of the surface mining law for his support and leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives leading to enactment of SMCRA in 1977.
Morris Udall's leadership in the House protected public lands through passage of the Wilderness Act and the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, as well as the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act.
In 1984, Morris Udall was named the most respected and most effective member of the U.S. Congress by the full membership, supporters and opponents alike.

The Morris K. Udall scholarships provide up to $5,000, or the cost of tuition, fees, books, room and board, whichever is less, to sophomores and juniors who have demonstrated a strong academic record and outstanding potential for leadership.

The Hensons incorporated the L5 Society in August of 1975, and sent its first 4-page newsletter in September to a sign up list from the conference and Dr. O'Neill's mailing list.
